The ABC pilot "Good Christian Bitches" has landed its main villain and outrage from the Parents Television Council.
According to Deadline, Kristin Chenoweth has signed on star in the Darren Star produced pilot, which is based on the novel of the same name by Kim Gatlin. Chenoweth's role in the drama will be that of Darlene, the "HBIC" (Head 'Bitch' in Charge) of the "G.C.B.'s." The pilot revolves around a recently divorced mother of two named Amanda (Leslie Bibb), who returns to her hometown of Dallas and hopes to reconnect with her old group of friends. The problem is that her friends are now lead by Darlene, who was a victim of the torture brought on by Amanda and her mean girls crew, which means that vengeance will served on a very chilled dish.
With Chenoweth in the role of Darlene, the character (and the show) could be ratings gold if brought to series, but the pilot hasn't even been shot yet and the PTC is already sharpening their pitchforks.
Deadline also reported that the Parent Television Council, fresh off of their anti-Skins campaign, has set their sights on the ABC pilot because of its (tentative) name and the derogatory implications on the Christian faith and women in general.
Here's a statement from PTC president Tim Winter about the watch group's latest target:
ABC’s decision is not only an affront to women, it blatantly attacks the world’s largest faith... The ‘b-word’ is toxic and is used to degrade, abuse, harass, bully and humiliate women. And the ‘Christian’ element only adds insult to injury. Would ABC even consider another faith to denigrate? Would they even consider a program title or a plot line based on ‘Bitches’ who were Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist? I suspect not, and I certainly hope not. So why the double standard?"
Okay, I'm all about freedom of speech and all that jazz, but that should also apply to the PTC when they go on these rants. Here are somethings that the PTC should also think about concerning this particular rant:
1. The name WILL be changed if it heads to series. Despite this fact, the watchgroup is still raising cain about ABC demoralizing the Disney name by attacking Christianity through even trying to put such a show as "G.C.B." on the air. When the new title is announced, will Mr. Winter still have his morality phaser gun set on kill? Even if he hasn't seen a single frame of the show?
2. Noise attracts onlookers. In other words, the more noise they make towards the show, the more buzz and hype the show might get, which goes against the PTC's wishes. Hell, the execs at ABC might think twice on changing the name and keep it and market it the best way they can. You can't just attack something without thinking about the consequences, especially the ones that inflict harm on your cause.
3. Why bring other religions into the argument? I'm still quite puzzled on that piece of the statement...
4. Turn the channel. Please. Then after you turn off your TV, remove it from your house, filter your Internet, and your kids still come home from school talking about a show called "Good Christian Bitches", it is then time for you to do what you should've done at first: Parent. Your. Kids.

Erm…he wrote GCB. That's the right acronym.
And I agree wholeheartedly with that final sentiment.
^^ And I have to disagree with nearly everything stated by Mr. Estes. My first question would have to be this: how does the freedom of speech play into this discussion? Freedom of speech provides the PTC with the right to express their opinions in regards to the ABC pilot, just as it protects Mr. Estes' right to disagree with the PTC's comments (in the same way I have the right to post this reply to both). In the quotation provided, there is no mention of the PTC taking any sort of inappropriate or violent action towards ABC for their decision, it is simply a statement of opinion, and therefore falls in exactly the same category as Mr. Estes' comments that follow.
Secondly, the likelihood that the name of the show will change if it's picked up doesn't change the fact that "working title" is still offensive to women and Christians in three simple words. Additionally, *if* you are offended by the name (and I fully realize that not everyone will be offended), then the idea that a trusted company would accept such a project is a bit of an affront to that trust.
"Noise attracts onlookers." I can certainly agree with this statement and nearly the entire point. The only disagreement I have with this point is in the last sentence, and again goes back to the quote that's posted. "You can't just attack something without thinking about the consequences…" Personally, I don't see anything in the quote to consider an "attack" on either ABC or the pilot in question, although I would agree that the PTC's comments are strongly worded (as are this post's author's comments at times).
As to the point of bringing up other religions, the comment is intended to bring a bit of perspective to the fact that the Christianity tends to be the only religion that society seems to think can be publicly slandared without fear of upsetting political correctness. While Christianity certainly has it's share of fanatics and those who do the faith a great disservice with their statements and actions, they are certainly not the only group to have people who align themselves with the group and yet do not hold to that group's ideals or philosophies.
Finally, I definitely agree with the premise proposed that parents need to be more involved with the responsibilities of actually parenting of their children. Being associated with the public education system (and simply watching and studying society for myself), I have seen the effects of too many children growing up being parented by television and video games. People who decide to have children have an obligation to provide their offspring with more than just room and board. While it may be difficult in these days where both parents (if they're blessed to actually have two parents) have to work outside the home to make ends meet, time must be made to involve themselves in the child's life.
Regardless of either my or Mr. Estes' opinions, however, the author does make an important point. If you disagree with or disapprove of ABC's decision about this particular production, the best thing you can do is change the channel. If you feel strongly enough about it, you can boycott ABC (even Disney, if you so choose). The most important thing, however, is that you take what you will from the PTC, Mr. Estes and/or myself and make up your own mind.
