Harry Connick Jr. Wows in Idol Premiere

Harry Connick Jr. is no stranger to the American Idol stage. He mentored the top four contestants in last year’s version of the show, and was so successful, he was officially adopted as a judge for this season. After the premiere last night, it’s clear that his brand of humor is just what the show needed to get AI’s judge dynamic back on track, and he fits right in with Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez. Needless to say, it’s a welcome switch from the diva drama of Nicki Minaj vs. Mariah Carey last year.

Harry Connick Jr. first rose to fame when Rob Reiner asked him to score When Harry Met Sally, and since then, Connick Jr. has seen his star rise in the  music world. He’s not exactly a hip young pop megastar, but he’s incredibly talented and will likely draw in a few older viewers. Though older viewers aren’t necessarily prized in the TV realm, taking them away from say, CBS, would be great for FOX. And as younger folks get to know him, they might start to love him as well.

He was a good get for American Idol, and this appears to be a promising season after the premiere. There’s no telling how long this train will last, but it hasn’t run out of steam yet, it seems.
