An Idiot Abroad: Ricky Gervais Reveals Plans for Christmas Special

An Idiot Abroad isn't quite over yet, despite confirmation that the second series is the show's last.

Ricky Gervais is a two-seasons-and-a-special kind of guy. His series The Office followed that formula, as did his second series, Extras. It's likely that his new sitcom Life's Too Short will follow the same route. Only The Ricky Gervais Show, an HBO animated comedy comprised of previously recorded discussions, has broken that mold, with a third series on tap for next year.

An Idiot Abroad will also follow the two-seasons-and-a-special formula. The series just finished up its second series in the UK, with that series to air on Science Channel in the US sometime next year. Gervais confirmed earlier this year that the second series of An Idiot Abroad would indeed be the last, though he hinted that there might just be a Christmas special on tap for 2012.

It looks like those plans are coming to fruition. Gervais posted on his blog Tuesday about a meeting he'd had with Pilkington about his idea for the Christmas special. That idea, which he'd originally imagined as a show titled The Short Way Round, saw Pilkington riding around the world in a bicycle with Life's Too Short star (and dwarf) Warwick Davis sitting in the basket.

"Karl wondered if there would be a world record in it, as no one else has ever cycled round with a dwarf in a basket before," Gervais wrote. "Nothing to beat."

While Life's Too Short won't air on HBO until early next year, I have to say that I'm excited about the possibility of seeing Davis and Karl in the possible Christmas special for An Idiot Abroad. The two do have great chemistry, after all. Just watch this video.

Gervais didn't mention just how successful his pitch to Davis and Pilkington was, but here's hoping that he sold them.

An Idiot Abroad 2 airs next year in the US.
