Ever since the funniest television comedy of the decade was cancelled (too soon) after its third season, there have been talks of an Arrested Development movie. Cast members of the show have listed the film in various stages of conception and development, though their stories haven't matched up. In fact, just last week, star David Cross (who played Tobias Funke on the show) called the project "dead," and that it was "not going to happen."
Jason Bateman, who played main character Michael Bluth on the series, debated that fact with the Los Angeles Times. "David says that it's dead, but it's not dead at all," Bateman countered.
What's the hangup? That can be blamed on the unavailability of writer/director Mitchell Hurwitz and star Will Arnett (who played Gob Bluth), both of whom are filming a pilot of Wilde Kingdom, which stars Arnett as a Beverly Hills mogul who falls in love with a tree-hugger who despises him.
"Mitchell Hurwitz is busy shooting a new pilot with Will Arnett, and perhaps when they're done shooting and editing and he's delivered that, perhaps he'll jump into writing the script," Bateman said.
It's interesting, though, because various reports have claimed that a script is already written, and that the project has been slated for release in 2011. But according to Bateman, that's not the case at all. In fact, a studio hasn't even backed the film yet. "Once the script is done, it goes to the studio and they decide if it's a script they want to make, and the actors will decide if they want to be in it."
That's a far cry from the "almost-ready" cries from entertainment sources around the internet. What do you think? Who is right, Bateman or Cross? Would you want to see an Arrested Development movie, or would you rather just let the series speak for itself? Sound off in the comments below!
As much as it kills me to say, it ain't gonna happen. If Hurwitz wanted it to happen, he'd stop with the tv pilots and write the script
I really believe that this is going to happen. There is an immense cult following, the show is brilliant, and the actors are behind it. If studios took the time to make and spend a LOT of money on Serenity after Firefly (That show has a significantly smaller following), they will have to make an Arrested Development movie which would be much cheaper to make in comparison. I would watch it at least once in theatres and buy the dvd, as would my friends. There is too much crap on TV we need more of the quality writing and acting that came with AD.PS: I also want a Veronica Mars movie!
Of course we want the movie to be made or we wouldn't still be talking about it! But you know how these things go. . .
Make it so!
If no one wanted it to happen, people wouldn't be asking about it all the time. I agree, there is a huge cult following that would be dedicated to seeing and supporting the movie/DVD/anything Arrested! This fan page is weak right now, but was only created a few days ago. The mission is to show just how many people would love to see the movie. Check it out if you love AD!http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-Our-Bluths/1…..
YES!YES!YES! I want more Arrested Development!!! This is by far the funniest show I have ever seen! I still cannot believe a show this clever didnt make it. I would be on the edge of my seat waiting to see the movie, and I know a lot more people that feel the same way!
They have to make a movie – that was the funniest show ever. I watch the DVDs over and over – they are better than anything on TV right now.
heyullll yeah i would love to see that movie! ive watched an episode every day for like 2 years. its such an amazingly great show, with even on repeat!
are you kidding? i've been waiting for an arrested development movie since the first episode. let's just hope bateman is right.
I want an Arrested Development movie very badly! I hope that it's not dead!
I would love love love an AD movie, and I hope that Bateman is right and it will someday become a reality. Heck, even if it's just a film of the table read of the rough draft I would pay to see it in the theater, and then pay to own it on DVD. Seriously.
Of course we all want Jason Bateman to be right!!!!!!Come on!! We have to have a movie!! Free chicken!!AD feverrrrrrrrrrr
Make the movie!!!! Don't make us wait to long! the longer that goes by.. the less a chance of it happening!
Please, please make this movie! I love this show. Everytime my DVR records it I am soooooooo happy!
Please make the movie!!! It was an excellent show which ended way too early.
PLEASE make the movie. I started watching Arrested Development a week ago and flew through all the 3 seasons. The show was definitely cut short. It is arguably the funniest show of the decade.
Seriously, this 3 series cinematic art was the best series I have ever seen. Timing, and delivery was excellent… I would absolutely see the movie, weather it would do the series justice…I dunno, it would need to be written very well or even split into a double show. Maybe a tv mini series. Either way, I would love to see these guys again
I will go see this movie 100 times…on opening weekend. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
I would bet a bar of soap that this movie will never make it out of the rumor stage. As much as we'd hope to see such a movie, odds are staggeringly high that our fevered collective wish will remain just that. Disappointedly confident in this fact, I've gone ahead and used the bar of soap.
This is by far the most intelligently written sitcom to ever come about. I still watch the series often and catch new things that I didn't see or hear previously. I've also come to love the entire cast and I try to follow them and their careers as much as I can. With all the shows still in syndication after years and years of moronic comedy and simpleton styled jokes, I can't believe it would be that hard to find the funding and/or time to write shoot and produce this picture. I have already committed myself to seeing this picture at least 5 times (if it ever makes its way to a theater) just to show my support.
PLEASE GOD LET THEM MAKE THE DAMN MOVIE ALREADY! It's bad enough they canceled the best show on tv :(
i would like both a movie and for the show to come back, please.AD is the fricking best.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME????THERE WILL BE ALOT OF DISSAPOINTED PEOPLE IF THIS MOVIE IS NOT MADE…
Movie all the way!
For the love of God make the movie!!! this has gathered such a cult following… all of my friends i make watch a few episodes become obsessed with it, cuz it was the best show ever made/written. i work at best buy and in the last 6 years, we sell more of the seasons regularly now than EVER before, because its just sort of catching on. The same thing happened with family guy. so I know the show likely wont ever go back on air, but I think a movie or set of movies should positively be made for the sake of humanity
The problem is it is NOT a "huge" cult following. It is a very tiny cult following. Think about it…even if EVERY SINGLE person who watched the show FOR FREE…over FOUR YEARS AGO…paid to see it, it would do less than $30 million at the box office. Now factor in the fact that the vast majority of that small audience has moved on (as adults do way sooner than 4 years) and that sit-coms don't translate to movies very well (especially in the age of piracy since you don't get anything out of the big screen expierence that you can't get on your computer monitor) and you are looking at box office of $15 million. Tops. Fox already lost enough millions of dollars on the show. They are not going to pay for the movie to lose money as well. The movie is dead. It is amazing that people don't realize that the cast has been purposely playing with you from day one. Right up to Bateman's latest statements. He knows damn well there is no movie going to be made. He just lieks sseeing how stupid the fans really are.
That's just it. The studios took a chance on Serenity (a movie which lends itself to the big screen MUCH mnore than a sit-com) and they LOST MORE MONEY.Arrested Developemnt's following is anything but "immense" The ratings were terrible, and got worse EVERY week. Almost literally every show had fewer viewers than the previous one.) Which is funny since people claimed that everyone who watched it was immediately hooked.) And here is he other thng….the last episode aired FOUR YEARS AGO! You know…I liked Jason's Bateman's first starring role show It's Your Move. I was pissed when it was cancelled after only 18 episodes. I held out hope for it to come back. Bu the thing is…I was TWELVE at the time. I had an excuse to act like a child because I was one. But even as a child, I gave up that hope way soner than 4 years. By the time this movie could be released, it would be almost 6 years after the show last aired a new episode. MOVE ON! Most fans already have.
THIS MUST HAPPEN!!
bring on the movie !!!
a movie, the return of the series… SOMETHING
