T.J. Holmes, news anchor for CNN's weekend edition of "CNN Newsroom," will be bidding adieu to the cable news channel to join BET in a new "multi-level platform talent deal." The talent agreement includes a Holmes's own show, specials, and other hosting possibilities for the network.
In the announcement which was sent out Wednesday, Stephen G. Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials for BET, hailed Holmes as an "outstanding news anchor" who has a bright future lined up with the network.
"We look forward to weaving T.J.'s mixture of credibility and charisma into our fabric," Hill said in the BET Network press release.
While Holmes is mostly seen on CNN during the weekends, he also has covered plenty of big news stories in the past few years. Most notable coverage includes the assassination of Suddam Hussein, the 2010 Gulf oil spill, and the first Summer Olympic games since the September 11 attacks. Holmes is a graduate from the University of Arkansas, where he also serves as a member of the Chancellor's Board of Advisors.
The move to BET could be a smart move on not only on Holmes's part, but BET as well. Currently, BET doesn't have a nightly news program on their line up as they did in the past. Hopefully, T.J. Holmes will fill that void with a nightly news show ala his soon-to-be CNN counterpart Anderson Cooper, which could focus on the problems of African-Americans that aren't heard on a nightly basis. With a (hopefully) nightly/daily news show in the works, and a slew of other specials on the horizon, T.J. Holmes could become BET's answer to Anderson Cooper and possibly have his own off network show in the future.
There has been no word on when T.J. Holmes's final newscast with CNN will air or when his stint with BET will begin.
