AMC has just debuted another new teaser from Better Call Saul, the upcoming Breaking Bad spin-off/prequel that follows the adventures of Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman, the scummy attorney. While this new thirty second spot has even less footage than the original teaser from a week or two ago, it at least offers a tiny amount insight into what the show will actually be about.
In the clip, Vince Gilligan says that this takes place 10 years before Saul ever meets Jesse and Walt, and he starts out as “Jimmy McGill.” Something happens where he has to transform himself into Saul Goodman, but the mystery of the show, or at least the pilot, is how and why.
Previously, it’s been said that Better Call Saul will take place before, during and after the events of Breaking Bad, but at least initially, it’s clear that it’s starting from quite a ways before. I’m not sure if it will jump through time over the course of its seasons, or if it will be flashing forward and backward within individual episodes.
I think we’re all on our knees praying that the show turns out well and doesn’t taint the legacy of Breaking Bad. It certainly sounds interesting from a conceptual level, but prequels are always tricky, and rarely seem like a good idea. Hopefully Vince Gilligan knows what he’s doing here, and Saul will thrive on Breaking Bad’s coattails, not simply ride them.
What do you think? Will Better Call Saul be a hit, or is it trying to recapture something that shouldn’t be recaptured?
