New Boardwalk Empire Season 2 Promo

Boardwalk Empire returns for season 2 next month on HBO and to gear up for the new season a new promo has been released. Unlike the last promo (to view head here) which shows a collection of scenes from new episodes, this one is purely to set the tone and the dangerous situation that leading man Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) appears to to be in.

We get to see Nucky taking a customary stroll on the boardwalk, something that he did on many occasions last year and was generally met with well wishers (except that one time when someone tried to shoot him). This takes a turn for the menacing as the group that surround him look like they are wanting more and more. This claustrophobic feeling of this large crowd bombarding Nucky is heightened by those familiar faces that we see on the periphery. This long list includes Nucky's brother Eli (Shea Whigham), the no longer loyal Jimmy (Michael Pitt), former girlfriend Lucy (Paz de la Huerta), Agent Van Alden (Michael Shannon), Al Capone (Stephen Graham), Richard Harrow (Jack Huston) and former rival Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg). Even people who you expect to be by Nucky's side appear to be part of this hostile force such as Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald), his loyal servant Eddie (Anthony Laciura) and Chalky White (Michael K. Willaims).

This suggests that Nucky is far from safe this year, even from those that he should be able to count on. Has he played his hand in too many schemes to remain in his lofty position this year? It also seems to be saying that Nucky will be suspicious of all those people that he surrounds himself with, which could make for a very paranoid county treasurer in the new season.

The trailer is a perfect set up for this new season and has an added edge of danger as Nucky stands on the boardwalk by himself at the end only to have an unseen person whisper his name. Will Nucky's luck run out this year?

Boardwalk Empire had a very successful first season and has been nominated for 18 Emmys including Best Actor (Steve Buscemi), Best Supporting Actress (Kelly Macdonald) and for Best Drama.

Season 2 will premiere on HBO Sunday, September 25.
