HBO might be closing the curtains on Boardwalk Empire after next year’s season five. Right now, it’s just a rumor (originating on 4Chan, no less), but it’s worth considering whether Boardwalk season five would be a good time to stop. Here’s the info so far from the HBO source:
“It’s not official yet. It’s just rumblings I’ve heard throughout the office. First it was 10 episodes, then maybe 9 and now I believe they’ve settled on 8. This probably won’t be announced for some time until HBO figures out their schedule and budgets I’m sure but I’ve been told that 5 will be the last season.”
Only eight episodes may indicate they’re scaling back and winding down, and honestly, I think it’s about time.
Don’t get me wrong Boardwalk is one of the best shows on TV, but it just sort of…exists. It has a small, quiet fanbase, and has gone on for so long, most of the major characters are dead, and even the lead, Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson, feels like a guest star in his own show. I think it may be time to wrap the series up with a bow so HBO can devote their resources to newer projects.
