Bones Season 6 Finale: Time For a Big Change

BonesThe episode title said it all "The Change in the Game", but in Bones season finales in the past there has been much build up with little pay off. These have included the dream/coma sequence of season 4, followed by Booth (David Boreanaz) last year shipping off to Afghanistan and only going for a chaste hand hold with Brennan (Emily Deschanel). This year though the ending was a lot more 'who and the what now?!' Be warned if you haven't seen the finale and intend to, stop here as there are major spoilers ahead.

So yes that really did just happen and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. After last weeks ambiguous 'did they/didn't they' moment we got secure confirmation that it was indeed the former of these two options, as Brennan revealed to Booth at the end of the finale that she is pregnant... and he is the father. The main reason for my somewhat dismay to the story is that it has all happened off camera, I know the reason for this is to make the impact of that last scene have more zing, but by not showing it they are surely annoying the hell out of the part of the audience that have invested a lot of time in to this show and wanting these two to be a couple.

This also poses the question of whether they have been having a month long secret affair or if in the true style of TV she got pregnant from that one time that was alluded to last week. Either way this new development is one of huge proportions for the show and will likely propel them towards coupledom. Though Booth is the marrying kind whilst Brennan clearly isn't, striking one of the many opposites that makes this relationship the unique one that is is and making the fact that they are now having a baby together all the more intriguing. This isn't the first time that the pair have discussed having a child together but before it was in a completely sterile and non romantic manner, this accidental pregnancy is a completely different story.

Going in to a season finale you know that the last 5 minutes are going to have some big moments, especially when it is hyped up beforehand but I didn't expect the bombshell to be this big. Maybe my guard was down because the Bones finales have felt like a bit of let down in the past or because I believed the writers when they were super vague about not writing in Emily Deschanel's real life pregnancy in to the show. Executive producer Stephen Nathan has told Entertainment Weekly that the pregnancy idea was discussed before Deschanel also found out that she was also pregnant, making this story one of happy coincidence and meaning that they won't have to think of any camera or prop tricks to hide the growing bump.

In other baby news in the finale Angela (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) had theirs in what has been my favourite story of the year on Bones. Their baby boy was healthy, with no signs of the LCA that they had feared but had acknowledged could be a reality that they could face together. The boy was named Michael Staccato Vincent Hodgins, which was a lovely nod to the recently deceased 'squintern' and he is already equipped with a Billy Gibbons like cap. Whilst these scenes weren't part of the big 'holy wow' moment of the night they were the right amount of humorous and tender and emphasised why these two are really the heart of the show.

What did you all think? Are you happy with the final reveal of the episode? Annoyed that their romantic relationship has started off camera? Excited for what this means next season? Let us know in the comments below.

I have had trouble with Bones all year and not because of HANNAH perse … I have had trouble because of the lousy execution.  This show used to be written well.  The characters were not shadows of their former selves.  There was angst and banter and debate with out the meanness and down right nastiness toward each other.  As will everything else this season I am disappointed in not only the route they took but the manner in which they presented it.  If HH and SN think that Booth and Brennan would be a cute loving couple feeding each other dessert and that is the ONLY way they could think of writing them without this baby then they have no imagination.  I find it hard to believe that they have fallen so far.  Season one of this show was great.  Season two was great.  Season three was awkward but I blame that on the writers strike.  Season for was hit and miss.  Season five was more miss than hit.  Season six will go down as one of the worst seasons ever on any show.  I will not rewatch one of these shows – which annoys me since I bought them all on iTunes before they aired.  Not only will I not do that next year, I have taken BONES out of my DVR queue.  If they can't bother to be more creative, write better shows then why should I bother to watch.

I honestly enjoyed the B&B will they/won't they until they decided to PUSH THE SHIP.  They should have left it alone.  Rather than follow the Moonlighting Curse (which I don't believe in but it seems that they have gotten a hold of the DVDS and are taking Notes – FYI HH&SN the David/Maddie baby angst killed them — KILLED them as a couple and as a show – did you get that in your notes too?)

I won't be back.  And I won't be watching THE FINDER.

Oh shut up the show is fantastic! I will admit its not the same but it is still a good show!

      Dear ElleDee,

thank you – you speak my mind. With all of the above  – especially with the description of the previous seasons – first, second and most of third I have rewatched the episodes a dosen times….fourth and fifth – NONE. Troughout the sixt I had my finger constantly on the fast forward button.

Theres not much more to say - you hit the nail on the head.

I've just about had it with this show because it's dropped the mystery and science of crime to concentrate on relationships alone. No puzzling murders with quips and quirks, no exotic scientific deductions from sparse data, nothing but love, babies and domestic arguments.

It's like 'Friends' all over again!

I have a theory that they did not have sex – she's pregnant with his sperm bank contribution.  This development will take their ship to a new level & we'll get to watch.  And if I'm wrong – that's OK – maybe we'll see it in flashbacks.  And, I'm totally OK with the scientific angle taking a back seat; to me, the specialness of "Bones" has always been in the continuing stories of the characters.  See the CSIs or the Law & Orders if you want strictly cop work.  Even though the show has strayed from Kathy Reichs' books, she has always included Brennan's personal life stories.

I was thinking the same thing! I don't believe they slept together- if they did, then wow. But I feel that they would have at least addressed what happened last week, but no.. nothing. It's like last week never even happened. I mean, was Brennan telling Angela "it's from Booth too" (about the rabbit) their way of telling us that they are together? AHHHH!! Why can't they just put it out there, instead of stringing us along even more? I love this show, love their banter and what not, but seriously? 6 years? It's getting a little ridiculous now. Of course, I'll continue to watch, because I've watched for this long, (did the same with ER.. 15 years!) but I really don't know how much more of this I can take. lol

Booth and Brennen had sex?  Screenshot or it didn't happen.

I felt seriously hurt that we didn't see the romance. I didn't need crazy graphics, but geez… I've been watching for 6 years and falling in love with wanting them to fall in love. Then… bam! These 2 have enough problems getting together, I wonder if next season Bones is going to approach the pregnancy like a scientific procreation thing, and not her and Booth being together. I don't have high hopes for next season.

  5. yvette says:

I think it's absolutely great that Brennan is pregnant because just by her comment that she doesn't understand why angela and her hubby are not more apprehensive about it leads me to believe that she is going to take more of a scientific approach to the whole situation. I also think it's about time that she has some permanant link to booth because they are a great couple and I can see that the pregnancy will make them both edgy and maybe bring back some of the banter they used to have more often. Trust me, no matter how much you love someone, being pregnant can bring up a lot of animosity. Guys you should at least give it a chance…..

  6. Chris says:

I was shocked ,It is about time those two got together I hope it lasts I would have liked to see more romance too. Can't wait for the seasons premier.

  7. Emma says:

I'm just hoping they'll do a back track episode at the start (or at any point!) next season ie. 6 weeks earlier… type thing but classier.

  8. Melissa says:

I love this show! I don't find the relationships to be distracting i like them. With tv shows i'm sure they take in to consideration what the audiance is looking for.  If they have more feedback on the science aspect of the show i'm sure they would write the show more toward that area.  I think alot of people want Booth and Brennan to be together so that's how season 6 has played out.  The show can't be how it was in Seaons 1.  Everything has to gradually change and grow or it might as well be a gameshow where everything is the same: answer questions, win a prize.  Life isn't like that.

As far and the hanky panky is concerned i would have definitly liked to see more than just a hug in bed maybe a kiss and then cut to the next scene so we can speculate on what happened.  Brennan being pregnant in the next Season seems logical since she is in real life and its easier to write a show with the pregnancy then go around it.

Loved the finale.  Cried when the baby was born and loved the "vincent" part of the babies name.  I was crushed when Mr. Nigel Murray died last week. Everyone has their opinions on the show.  I will definilty watch next season and can't wait!

  9. Beth Marie says:

I loved the  final episode FROM START TO FINISH. The cute little bratty birthday boy. Angela, giving birth to a healthy beautiful baby boy to the announcement of Brennan's pregnacy to Booth. The mystery of the mangled body in the bowling alley to the arrest of the murder suspect. Genius. Gave the audience a show that will be remembered for a long time. I enjoyed watching  "The Change in The Game very much.

  10. Monica says:

Heres my take.  I hated the way this ended but I started thinking what would I do as a writer.  Well, I hope the writers see this…

Booth left Bones his "stuff" and I believe they did not sleep together I think Bones got her self artificially impregnated with his "stuff'.  I feel that Bones thinks her time with Booth has come and gone and she is planning on moving on with her life. She stated before she wanted to have a baby and that she wanted Booth to be the donor.  I think the smile on Booths face at the end of the show was his "oh yeah right" smile.  I believe that Season 7 will begin with him stating to her that it couldn't be his baby as they have NOT slept together and she will reveal the 'stuff' he gave her permission to use.  I hope that Season 7 is truly about them finding the love in each other that we all know is there.  Booth will approach Bones with his romantic side and Bones will once again admit she loves him.  Here's to hoping the writers match my prediction or come up with something better.

  11. Vivi says:

Totally agree…loved it!  I hope they did it.   I don't see them getting married, but having the baby and perhaps living together.  For me, the banter must continue between them.  I would however like to see a bit more mystery in the "who done it" department from the writers. Love the baby's name, and that he's healthy! I will watch next season.

  12. Laura says:

I also agree with you, vivi and this season is running good.

  13. Sapphira says:

Love the ending. I think they did it because booth suddenly understands Brennan's jargon, if you noticed in the beginning of the episode Booth translated the anti-mortem stuff Brennan said to the cop. Booth would usually ask Brennan to use lay man term or ask her to explain it. Can't wait to see Sweet's reaction in season 7.

  14. Janet says:

I enjoyed the show very much.  My teenagers and I watched the show to see Angela's baby being born plus to see if the baby was alright.  The ending filled my house with screams of delight – we can't wait to see next season.  I, personally, wonder how they will solve crimes together since Brennan will be confined to the lab and Boothe needs a new partner in the field – unless they find some way around this conundrum.

  15. Flo says:

I absolute;y love "Bones" wouldn't miss it for the world. But you have to realise everyones taste differs. If it didn't life would be oh so boring!! I have to admit that the season 6 finale was most certainly a jaw dropper. I would most definitely have preferred there to have been a bit of romance, as Bones and Booth had a lot of chemistry going. Interesting to see where they take it in season 7. Would be a pity if they keep it all scientific, we after all watch for that little bit of romance between the 2 of them, and there wasn't even a kiss!!

  16. Shannon says:

I'll admit I'm disappointed they didn't at least give us a Booth and Bones waking up the next morning in bed naked and heading to work scene in (S6Ep23). Then I could see the possibility that lead to the pregnancy. I just hope they start the next season off with Booth or Boones having a flash back to this happening in a dream and bringing this into play when they had sex then see the connection of them waking up together in bed in Booths apartment. Also since they like to leave us out of the loop and in the dark so much. Booth and Bones are living together but Boones hasn't given up her place yet. Now we can get back to how the series started in the first place. The one that really got us all hooked (Season 1) and focus on their partnership and solving murders. Only this time they'll have a really strong bond seeing as Boones is after all pregnant. maybe have the season end with a big bang they're finally going to get married before the baby arrives (Booth Proposes). Please don't have this be a version of X-files Mulder and Scully relationship and then have Bones the Movie before they finally end up together. Honestly I think this is the only way to salvage everything in the past couple seasons.

  17. Shelly says:

I must admit that I feel really cheated about the non-payoff of the romance between Bones and Booth.  Couldn't they have shown something similar to the episode when Booth had the brain tumor and imagined they were married?  I mean, wow, where's the romance I've been waiting years for!

Total Bones fan, love the whole cast, and wish they'd bring back Zach!
