Well, here's a surprise for you: Vince Gilligan doesn't know how Breaking Bad will end. The creator and head writer of the beloved AMC drama admitted to Today that nothing is set in stone for the fifth and final season.
"Wish I did," he admitted. “I have certain hopes and dreams for how the characters will wind up, but I don’t have anything nailed down plot-wise.”
That's surprising news to me. If any show on television has given the impression of momentum and direction, it's Breaking Bad. The story of Walter White has been a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, with his well-intentioned efforts to leave his family a nest egg have resulted in the loss of not only his connection to his family, but his connection to his own humanity as well. "I've lived too long," he lamented in the season 3 episode "Fly," and his life has only gotten bleaker since then. Season 4 featured his protracted face-off with distributor Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), and the lengths that Walter went to in his battle against Gus resulted in a new low for him.
Gilligan is adamant to end Breaking Bad after its upcoming fifth season, though: "It’s been the best job I’ve ever had, and I suspect I’m going to look back on it with a great deal of nostalgia. But after 16 more episodes, it will be time to end it all. It was always intended to be a finite, closed-ended show. You have to know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em... The closer we get to the final episode, I assume the worse it’ll be. But that’s why we’re ending after 16. You want to go out with fans of the show still being fans. The best we can do is be disciplined and honest in our storytelling, and not go for the bells and whistles. Let the chips fall where they may.”
Breaking Bad will air its fifth season sometime next year.
With Gus dead, there seems to be resolution to almost everything in the show… Where could it possibly go from here? While im excited to have another season, I just dont see how there is a season's worth of loose ends left.
I think what we’ll see in season 5 is the logical conclusion to everything. Hank has to find out about Walt, just as Jesse has to find out what Walt did.
Every loose end will be tied in Season 5. It will be drama at its finest. BrBa is the best show ever for so many reasons.
I hope Hank finds out. Hank is really the biggest tragedy of the show. He is the only one who is truthful and seems to try to be a good guy. I love Walt and Jesse but it becomes harder to defend them as the show goes on. I hope Mike dies. I was hoping in the season 4 finale that Walt would get to have Gus, Mike and Tyrus on the table a la Dexter but at least he got to be involved with the death of Gus and Tyrus. Man, I really hated Tyrus more than any tv character besides Peggy Hill. Anyway, I hope Walt gets to pull the trigger on Mike for all the times Mike has been a big fucker to walt this season. I also hope people come to their senses and realize Jesse treats Walt as bad as he treats Jesse. Jesse isn't really much better. But I actually defnd Walt's actions of the finale.
Here is my response to people's horror of the revelation in the final shot of episode 13.
Michelle McClaren said it perfectly. I mean, yeah, Walt HAD to do it. The DEA was not going to guard them forever, and they probably would've just thought that that was a "giant jerk-off" as Hank put it. Then after everything was clear Gus would murder, MURDER, Hank, Marie, Skyler, Walter Jr., and HOLLY. Yeah, a baby. Walt knows so much about chemistry, that he was knew the kid would be ok. So, yeah a kid is sick for a little while, then hes fine, so he can save a baby's life. So yeah, he did it without actually sacrificing the kid, or giving him any permanent injuries. Otherwise, a baby would have been murdered. So yeah, he HAD to do it. I don't know I'd say he is scarface yet, parlty because I haven't seen scarface but still, I can get an idea of what people mean when they say it, so I just don't think he is there yet. He HAD to do it to save everybody
Yeah he HAD to make that decision. But it was only a progression of horrible decisions he’s made. The life of Walter White reminds me of the song The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. All problems have solutions and a lifetime of f—ing thngs up are fixed in one determined flash.
The show has left us with 5 I major loose ends 1)Hank’s investigation of Heisenberg 2)Mike will have to come back to Albuquerque eventually and it seems Mike was fearful of their good run coming to an end…3)Walt’s cough is back 4)Skylar’s reaction to Gus’ death/Walt’s “I won” comment. 5)Walt’s meddling and manipulating of Jesse first with Jane then with Andrea’s little boy. These are all questions that require answers.
Does anyone know if AMC plans to run season 5 in its entirety or if they plab to split it into 2 seasons. I recall comments being made that AMC was thinking about pulling a “Rescus Me” of taping all 16 episodes at once and splitting them intyou and have my life for dinner two seasons. I’d actually almost rather they got it all ourlt in one year. I’m not sure I can handle 2 more years of this downward apiral.
Sorry made the comment on my mobile and i accidently filled in with the wrong words for a minute so i apologize if that last paragraph made little sense.
I don't think Walt is done dealing, I think that vent that he left open as he escaped his home from the hit men, led the Hit men right to what was left of his money, leaving Walt Broke. and has been said by others a showdown between Walt and Hank is still coming, and a showdown between Walt and Jesse as well.
I don't Understand when people or articles say things like " Walt was doing what he had to do." or like this article "The story of Walter White has been a tragedy ……with his well-intentioned efforts to leave his family a nest egg". Most people do not make the choices Walt has made, and he has long since chosen his path regardless of the frequency with which his options were all bad, Walter White is an unredeemable human being. HIs moral relativism has been absurdly morally bankrupt.
…that’s the tragedy.
How can you say that Walter doesn't have any redeeming qualities? While it's true that he's committed some despicable crimes, such as doing nothing while Jesse's girlfriend choked on her own vomit and giving Jesse a gun and encouraging him to take care of business when a junkie robbed on of their dealers, he's not all bad.
He took out Fring mostly to protect his family and also out of self preservation. Fring was the one who was morally bankrupt, killing people in cold blood when they became a liability and employing drug dealers who used children and killed them when they were no longer needed.
Walter knows that what he's doing is wrong. He's thought long and hard about it and he's struggled with the decisions he's made. However, he's crossed the point of no return and now that he's won the battle against Fring, he will continue down this path until someone defeats him the way he defeated Fring.
