Whenever there's a spin-off of any type of show, you immediately start looking for ways to differentiate it from its mothership. You can pay attention to how the cast gels together, the type of ground covered each episode, or the tone of the show as a whole, but there has to be enough of a common link to keep you interested while enough of a new identity to keep the spin-off from being a carbon copy of the original.
Predictably, Basketball Wives: LA shares a lot of qualities with its successful Miami counterpart. You have a group of women, ranging in age from their early 20s to mid 40s, who have at one time been affiliated with professional basketball players. You get to see the extravagant lifestyle that they've grown accustomed to, the continually mutating group dynamics that seemingly change by the minute, and the effect that their relationship with an athlete has had on both their personal and professional lives, which is sometimes not that positive.
But one major difference between the two is that LA is jam packed with hateful, hypocritical, judgmental women, particularly when it comes to Draya Michele. Michele, a model and young mother, used to work as a stripper and apparently VH1 has gathered the only prudes on reality TV to join her this season, because once this group of ladies heard that nugget of information, out came the claws that haven't been retracted since episode 1. While each cast member has gotten in their digs, I can't help but be bugged by it.
Most of the annoyance comes from how it seems like the group simply wants to pick at Draya, thanks to some preconceived paranoia that all young pretty women will instantly try to sleep with their husbands. (This is known as the Royce Reed Phenomenon.) If the group has such a problem with Draya and her past, then why was Jackie's "bachelorette party" so sexually explicit? You had strippers of both genders, vibrating panties, the re-emergence of The Rabbit into pop culture lexicon, and all types of raunch on display, and you didn't see anybody taking offense to what was going on. Imani's spent the first three episodes with her nose firmly in the air (the "worthless" comment to Draya made my blood boil), so it makes little sense why she'd be getting her drink on while waving dollar bills at strippers with backne all of a sudden. If you're such a morally upstanding woman and were so horrified that Draya was (gasp!) a stripper, shouldn't you have quietly left the room once the mechanic/fireman made his entrance? Don't both strippers have parents that would be "appalled" at the actions of their offspring? What would your kids think about seeing mommy making it rain for some random dude on national TV?
Jackie is the other main offender, as the reaction to Draya's party gift was rather uncouth. After getting fuzzy handcuffs, a candy g-string, and goodness knows what else after Laura and Imani raided the adult store (a'la Evelyn and Jennifer last season on Basketball Wives), it took Draya's innocuous gift to cross this arbitrary imaginary "line" that Jackie has when it comes to sex, which was beyond ridiculous. Since we know so little about these women, it just looks like Mrs. Christie is ready to pounce on anything remotely untoward that Draya happens to do, think, or say, and tonight highlighted that fact. Jackie's also the one who suggested incorporating strippers into her "wedding" plans this go around (her 16th), so if you're okay with getting lap dances on national television, you forfeit any and all rights to judge someone who used to strip for a living. Keep in mind, both of these were after Jackie was leading the charge with the "Draya's behavior at her party was inappropriate" train of thinking; it's a sin against nature for a woman to have a little too much to drink and dance at her own party, but bring on all the craziness when you want to get "married" for the 16th time.
Oh, okay.
Most people associate reality TV with debauchery and the morally depraved who simply want their 15 minutes of fame and will do anything to get it. Apparently the cast of Basketball Wives: LA didn't get the memo because they're easily the stuffiest, most judgmental reality cast I've come across and boy, have I seen my share of reality shows. It's a sad state of affairs when the youngest (and most notorious) member of the cast is the one with her head on straightest and is furthest removed from starting drama. Draya Michele may have the most infamous past of the LA Basketball Wives, but judging from the first three episodes of the show, she may just have the brightest future.
Thoughts, Quotes, & Observations:
- "No, that's too Snoop Doggy Dogg." Look at Wade with his street cred.
- "Not to prime is a crime." Say it two times, Napoleon.
- "I'm a teller, so they didn't tell me."
- As the male stripper is bending over: "I hope he don't fart."
- "Oh my goodness. Girl, you got talent, girl."

- No Gloria, Kimsha, or Tanya tonight. I'm okay with that.
- It feels like they've done a whole lot in 3 episodes. Poker, countless dinners, makeovers, bachelorette party, Draya's BET party, paintball, acting class, etc. Or maybe I'm just lazy?
- Jackie may be growing more heinous with each episode, but I feel for her with regards to the situation with her mother. Storylines like that help keep shows like this grounded and allow you to better understand that behind all the name calling and attitude is a person who's angry, hurt, or scared.
- That being said, Jackie needs to get a grip. To quote the fabulous Funky Dineva, "Just because something is real doesn't make it right. And just because you're bein' real doesn't mean you need to be real right now. Sometimes situations in life call for us to be fake right now or just be quiet. How about that?".
- Is it just me or did Wade have zero taste? The dresses he picked out were tacky and ill-fitting on Jackie, plus the rooms he was showing her weren't that impressive. His interview was nothing but smoke and mirrors and everything else was just disappointing.
- Malaysia's reaction in the club when Draya was getting too close to her makes me think that last week's apology to Laura was total BS. Her first reaction tonight was to go to the "knock a bitch out" well, so I have a feeling that the incident from the premiere wasn't as heat-of-the-moment as she led us to believe.
- Jackie constantly calling Draya "little girl" is too condescending for words. I would pay for Draya to refer to her as "old hag" just once.
- Next week, Draya takes Malaysia to a risque photo shoot and Jackie reveals she's been married three times before. Plus, Draya misses an important event (Jackie's "wedding"?) and Jackie says all sorts of horrible things about her.

I agree with this article. I feel like these group of women like to jump on Draya all the time calling her a little girl plus more. Great observation I feel they treat Draya like this because of her potential. First of all she is just 25 her career and life has really just begun.
