Caprica is Cancelled

Well this is no surprise:  Caprica is canceled.  What is kind of surprising is that SyFy is not just canceling Caprica, they are actually pulling it from the schedule for the immediate future.  I'm guessing the thinking is they can get better sweeps numbers off reruns of something more popular, like ... Dinoshark.  Here's the official word from Syfy:

The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2. These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.

“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for ‘Caprica’ and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,“ said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Syfy and Co-Head of Content for Universal Cable Productions. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, ‘Caprica’ has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

there is very little real sci fi on the SyFy network anymore. WWE Smackdown, Ghost Hunters, and Destination Truth is just cheaply made crap, no basis in science and the network is just interested in the bottom line, not nurturing quality programming. I always felt that when SciFi became SyFy that it was a bad sign- and so it has come to pass now. Hopefully, SGU, W13, Eureka, Sancutuary, Haven can keep their slots. I will keep watching those shows, but Syfy is slowly losing a very loyal customer base.

Not able to build the audience necessary? This has to be the falsehood of the century! Caprica is the BEST show the SyFy channel has to offer, and for the network executives to cancel the show is absolutely riddiculous. If there wasn't enough viewers, as they say, why then would the same network executives agree to airing an all day Capricathon prior to the newest episodes being shown? The audience was there. This show is the perfect blend of excellence with a capital E. The cinematography, special effects, technology, set design, production, and top of the line performances served to make Caprica the BEST show that cable TV has to offer. The decision to abruptly cancel this show will ultimately be the demise of what could serve to be a unique and innovative experience that appeals to a vast audience. This great loss is not only ours, but ultimately yours.
