Full disclosure time: I loved Battlestar Galactica, thought the finale was ridiculous, really liked the Caprica pilot, and really loathed the first couple of episodes of the series. So if I appear a little wishy washy about this whole Caprica falling-flat-on-its-face thing, forgive me. The fact is, the numbers are in and no amount of spinning will make them look good. A little over 1.1 million live bodies tuned in to watch the show, which TvByTheNumbers was quick to point out was less than Discover Channel's Swamp Loggers. With typical attrition rates, Caprica will probably be below a million before it goes on hiatus. Is there any hope in saving this show? Maybe a little.
The SyFy business model is little different from the rest of broadcast world, evident by the existence of such original programming as 'Mansquito.' It's hard to think what they may have up their sleeve, but Caprica is as much about keeping the Battlestar Galactica brand on a burner as it is, well, Caprica. Of course, it's not helping that the series apparently has only its withering audience carrying the torch. The story line is definitely dialed in, and the excellent cast seems to be constrained to playing characters that seem to be following a script rather than doing anything remotely human. However, a lot of terrible programs have started out exactly that same way. What was that show that started out with just a bunch of beefcakes and babes in space, that suddenly became an intellectual powerhouse? Oh yeah. Battlestar Galactica.
The ratings are indeed very worrying. But when you make statements like: "The story line is definitely dialed in, and the excellent cast seems to be constrained to playing characters that seem to be following a script rather than doing anything remotely human", it makes me wonder if you've actually watched the three episodes shown to date (including the pilot). The story line has already taken so many twists and turns, with many different openings and threads just starting to take off, I just can't see where that statement comes from. This isn't about "I liked it" or "I hated it", which is subjective and to which you are perfectly entitled, but rather actual analysis of particular elements.I know many procedurals and formulaic shows which "dial it in" every week. I can't for the life of me see how you could say Caprica is among their number, or that the characters don't exhibit human responses.
I love Caprica, so this is quite sad. Your article made me wonder, did the ending to Battlestar Galactica hurt Caprica? I think so. Here are my thoughts.http://www.genreaddict.com/tv-shows/did-the-end…..
I would have watched the show, save for the fact that from the BSG series we now know it's all building toward a big dead end! What's the point? A prequel to a neatly wrapped up show that has no scope for a sequel makes no sense, unless you're a glutton for punishment.PASS!
I loved BSG, but I'm having a hard time caring about any of these characters. It doesn't help that the show doesn't seem to have any focus. Having seen every episode, I don't think I could tell anyone what the show's actually about.
I grew up with BSG, and people seem to judge Caprica like it's supposed to be the same thing. Caprica is a spin off. That's why i love it. It brings you to a totally different side. Honestly I'm not a fan of everything on this new BSG but when it comes down to the story line, I'm hooked. I love how it's not the same. Because really, no one likes it when someone takes a great movie or show and trys to copy it.Let Caprica live…
