Castle: Why This Supposed New Love Interest Might Be A Good Thing

Evidence #4: Natalie Rhodes aka Nikki Heat

That was by far the funniest episode of the season and it remains as one of my favorite episodes of the entire show. When the actress who is playing Nikki Heat in the big screen asked Beckett if she could follow her around for a couple of days for research, Kate didn't think it would be a bad thing. It all changed when Natalie literally became her (brown wig and all) and set her eyes on Castle.

The detective was obviously green with jealousy, but it all changed when she found out that Castle had turned Natalie down. An episode later, she overheard him breaking up with Gina. An episode after that, they kissed. If it hadn't meant anything, they wouldn't have bottled it all up until it came to blows in the finale.

Bottom line, they grew even closer after that. We also saw the birth of their own form of saying they care for each other when Castle said "Always" to her for the first time.

Evidence #5: Alex Conrad

Castle's protegé, Alex Conrad, came to the precinct to meet the writer and ended up meeting Detective Beckett as well and was immediately enamored with her. He asked her out for a cup of coffee so they could talk about her job and Castle was crazy with jealousy. He even got his poker buddies to give Conrad a hard time and Kate obviously found out and called him out on it. He admitted he was jealous and that he wanted her all to himself and that having another writer running around with her was just not cool. Kate told him she thought his jealousy was really sweet and that he had nothing to worry about because she was a one writer girl. This was also the first time she said "always" back.

"To Love and Die in LA" and "Knockout" followed that episode, so you guys can see where I'm going with this, right?

The point here is that whenever someone tries to come between them, instead of driving them apart, Castle and Beckett always find a way to get even closer. This episode with Kristin Lehman seems like it will be exactly that kind of situation. In fact, I am willing to bet it's going to be a mix between the Jordan Shaw and Nikki Heat situation and the fact that this is the second episode we will see Kate's therapist just makes things sound even better. I don't know about you guys, but I am all for learning more about what Kate is thinking and what better catalyst to get her to open up than seeing Castle even slightly interested in another woman?

So take a deep breath, calm down. The season hasn't even started yet. Let's try to enjoy the ride first.

Fabulous article!!!! Very insightful! I hope this calms some of the panicked shippers down a bit. It certainly has me a lot more excited to see the episode! :-)

  2. Lori says:

    Amen sister!!!! My thoughts exactly:)

  3. furby says:

I think the fact that this has been done more than five times already (you forgot Will, Meredith, Ellie Monroe…) says it's becoming a lazy old trope. I'd like to see the show try something else to advance the story — how about Beckett actually talking to her Dad or Lanie or even Martha to reveal some info — and I certainly wouldn't want to see any "love interest" hanging around for more than an ep at this point. Move on.

  4. @nightowlang says:

Nicely said and exactly why I'm not worried! Looking forward to it!

  5. lame says:

I don't buy it, even if this investigator is around for more than one episode, it'll be nothing more than intense flirting, ala, Natalie Rhodes, just enough to make Kate turn green, and die hard shippers to want to burn Marlowe at the stake.

  6. Markel says:

I don't understand why there's this need to justify,"to stretch" every situation into an optimistic point of view,no matter what bullshit they throw us.

This thing is what really is: the easiest way to keep at bay some naive fans with some candies, like the almost ILY in the freezer, the final moments of L&M,the letter, just to mention the lasts.

Do you understand that there are no (REAL)consecutive actions in Castle, there will be no REAL progresses until they will be ready to stop this delaying (and near to become ridicolous) tactic?

You're smart,i appreciate many of your pieces, par exemple I consider

"Is Lack Of Continuity a Problem For Castle?" a masterpiece,a wonderful critical(I mean critical, not disapproval)approach, but PLEASE don't become another "In Marlowe we trust" or "Keep the faith" kind of fan.

I'm tired of this "blind faith" and of those people, ever ready to accuse someone of "Laesa maiestas" just for being critical(not prejudiced) about Marlowe and co.

    Kind regards from Austria… :-)

    • I don't think this is a matter of defending the show or not. If you follow my articles – and by what you said , it looks like you do – you know that I don't blindlingly defend the show and have pointed out its faults several times. In this case, the shippers (and I count myself as one, I admit) just went crazy when those spoilers come out and the season hasn't even started yet. I've got comments from people saying they would quit watching the show just because of that. I don't know about you, but I think that is a little premature.

So this wasn't about defending the show. It was about getting people to calm down and be reasonable.

Look, AWM & CO don't fear the "moonlighting curse". The fear comes from the studio who oversee the scripts. Marlowe knows he and his writers could put together stories that would be just as wildly entertaining as those of season 3 even after C/B got together. The people in the front office are the ones with the yellow streak. Just wish Andy and his crew the best and stand up to them if you can.

    • Vince says:

So,this is exactly what Markel was talking about!

Maybe, maybe I could agree with you but:

1-Look, AWM & CO don’t fear the “moonlighting curse”:

      Who says this?

Till now I have listened only (empty)words. To say "will they" means nothing (at least to me) if facts goes in the opposite direction…

I'm not saying I want them together right now,I'm just saying i'm disappointed for part of the storyline in the second half of the season, and for the damages they have done to the character of Kate with the Josh arc/we have a chence, bla, bla thing….

2- "The fear comes from the studio who oversee the scripts….The people in the front office are the ones with the yellow streak."

Personally I don't think it's true. ABC like other broadcasters is just interested in an adequate amount of ratings/viewers (which means $$$).I don't think they can say without any doubt that the prospective of a "Caskett" could be the dead of the show, and with this to force the writers in an absolutely unwanted direction.

I think otherwise this is the easiest way for them to keep fans (and shippers) invested (at least till they freak out for the umpteenth roadblock), and besides that an ace in the hole they can use if situation goes south and they should be desperate about a renew, like they did in the first part of season two for example.

Put them together for a couple of entire seasons could be an amazing challenge for them,a show of strength and skills, with a huge potential for a legendary show (with two main actors like that!!!!),but this need courage and they're lacking in courage…..this is their safe choice (Like Josh :-))) )

We'll see them together only in the end i'm sure.

But,If you have something that can prove your theory (a tweet from someone of the crew,a message from the ABC),something like "i want to put this two together but for now i can't" i'm really happy to apologise to everything, for accusing them.

Did you happen to read the recent article about how the studio had a cardiac when the script had Castle tell Kate he loved her. They were so bent out of shape Marlowe had to shoot it once the way it aired and once with him holding Kate and saying nothing, because the studio absolutely didn't want Castle to use those words. Once the studio realized how stupid it would be for Castle to stay mute they relented.

And yes, all storylines have to be approved by the studio, and they reserve the right to alter those scripts.

        • Vince says:

No,i didn't read that, maybe you could post it,i'm glad to read it.

Instead i read a tweets excange from Mrs Miller who answered one question.

          This is the sequence:

"I suspect the only initial "A" that could screw with the show is ABC. The finale had 2 endings. O_o"

          A. from Miller "there were not 2 endings shot 4 finale. Only 1 shot. Wherever you got that info it was incorrect."

"Laurie Zaks was quoted in TV guide as saying two endings were done – 1 with Castle's "I love you" & 1 without. No?"

Another answer from M:" No. I double checked w/ people. No"

          • Actually, that quote by Laurie Zaks is accurate. I interviewed her myself in July and she did tell us that they shot two different endings and the I love you one just got approved at the last minute.

  8. Vince says:

    So,wondering who's right? :-)))

  9. lame says:

The studio are the jerks, they don't trust AWM & CO who have shown that they can deliver the goods. Sorry to say, the C/B relationship will continue to suffer as long as they continue to interfere. They, the studio, care only that enough episodes are produced to make syndication profitable, and the storyline be damned.

  10. Richard says:

For the studios it's always the bottom line. Very few have any semblance of an artistic soul or point of view. A little jealous for Beckett might just get her to look at what's really important for her–that playing the waiting game with Castle may backfire. All in all, they will get closer this season. I used to be one who wanted a romance right off, but now I think I would enjoy the great sexual chemistry and deep affection they share. Either way, I am looking forward to the new season with much excitement.
