New Details on Sarah Michelle Gellar's Ringer

When it was announced that Sarah Michelle Gellar was coming back to television, I was beyond excited. Like anyone in their early 20s who grew up on WB goodness, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its cast will always hold a special place in my heart and anytime a cast member goes back to TV, it's worth checking out. Gellar has been the shyest member of the gang in terms of re-embracing the medium that shot her into stardom, so the mysterious Ringer seems like it's a special project.

TV Guide ran down some of the recently released details about the show, which has yet to receive a series order from CBS. Here are some of the aspects in a nutshell:

  • The basic premise of the show is that Bridget Cafferty is a witness in a murder trial. Scared for her safety, she leaves town without telling anyone and attempts to get in touch with her twin Siobhan, who commits suicide shortly after their conversation.
  • The twist? Bridget, a recovering addict, assumes Siobhan's identity in New York, but Siobhan's husband and best friend (who has twins of her own) quickly figure things out.
  • In soapier news, Siobhan's best friend Gemma is married to an alcoholic novelist who had been having an affair with Siobhan. If that wasn't enough, Bridget's AA sponsor Malcolm is across the country and they had been hot'n heavy in the past.

The more I hear about Ringer, the better it sounds. There'll undoubtedly be the mix of emotional material and action sequences that Gellar pulled off seamlessly in Buffy, so we know that she won't have any trouble adjusting to the material. The premise makes me excited to see footage (and to see who else gets cast) and I love that CBS is expanding their repertoire outside of their typical brand of show. Sarah Michelle Gellar may not be staking vampires on Ringer, but the demons she'll be fighting will be all too real.

Does this seem like a good vehicle for Sarah Michelle Gellar? Who else would you cast in Ringer? Judging by the details released, is this a good fit for CBS?
