The Good Wife returns tonight and we will finally get to see the outcome of the bombshell that was dropped on Alicia; that her best friend Kalinda had slept with her husband Peter when she work with him at the State Attorney's office. This news was perfectly (or not so perfectly) timed with Peter getting re-elected to the position of State's Attorney and we have already speculated what Alicia's next course of action will be here.
The 'in sickness' that the title of the episode could be suggestive of the vows that are taken in a marriage and could be aimed at Alicia and Peter, but they are also significant in relation to the case that is in focus this week at Lockhart/Gardner who are representing a client who needs a liver transplant. The twist in the case here is that they are going up against rival Patti Nyholm (guest star Martha Plimpton), who ends up being the one who needs help from Lockhart/Gardner after she is fired from her law firm. This case alone sounds like it will make for a compelling hour, with that coupled with the emotional fallout that can be expected from the Kalinda/Peter revelation this episode looks set to be another fabulous instalment of this consistently brilliant show.
After his absence was felt last episode (due to Broadway commitments), it is a welcome return to Chris Noth tonight. By welcome return, I of course mean that I hope Alicia doesn't subvert back to her role as 'the good wife' and unleashes both barrels, metaphorically speaking. It will be interesting to see how Alicia reacts to both Peter and Kalinda and when asked in a recent interview with The New York Times about where the betrayal feels stronger for Alicia, executive producer and co-creator Michelle King responded:
“For me, it would be the husband. But for Alicia? It reopens a wound with him. But the friend’s betrayal is awful and different. And Alicia doesn’t have a lot of friends. It strikes Alicia at the most enjoyable part of her new life: her work. So it’s right in her face. She’s questioning herself: Why did I not see this?”
