Chicago P.D. Season 3 Finale Review: The Final Crossed Line

Chicago PD

If you thought this season of Chicago PD was heart-pounding before, you better hold on because it’s nothing compared to tonight’s season finale. It’s been a fantastic ride with gripping stories, including the backdoor pilot to Dick Wolf’s next installment in the Chicago series, Chicago Justice. That case definitely had the Intelligence Unit on the edge of their seats, but in tonight’s episode there is no sitting still. A sequence of events unfolds Voight doesn’t see coming as it is his son who is the victim.

First things first, let’s deal with Roman’s big question from last week. You know, the one where he told Burgess he loved her and asked her to move to San Diego with him. After a few days cooler heads prevail. Burgess belongs in Chicago, so she and Roman have to go their separate ways.

It’s been clear for awhile that something has been going on with Voight’s son Justin. Voight had to hear through the grapevine last month that his son was in town. During a dinner with his daughter-in-law Olive and grandson a few weeks back, it was clear that something wasn’t being said. In a move very unlike the hands-on Sergeant, he didn’t push. After all, if Justin was in trouble he would come to his father wouldn’t he? Perhaps not in years past, but it’s a safe assumption that Voight would trust his son to come to him now, especially since he has his own family to think about.

Intelligence finds an Army widow named Melissa dead in the trunk of a car. There is no clear reason why an innocent, single mother would be killed in the brutal fashion that she was. They find out that she has been in constant communication with Justin for the past month.

When Voight goes looking for answers, he ends up finding his son shot and bound in the trunk of a car. Voight desperately tries to keep it together while Intelligence tries to figure out just what Justin was up to which got him into so much trouble. He was trying to help Melissa, who was a paralegal who refused to help an old friend rob her clients.

Before all the craziness starts Voight is promoted to Lieutenant, with the provision that his ‘proactive’ tactics end. The Commander has had it with Voight. Even as Justin lays in a hospital bed she offers Dawson Voight’s job.

Voight has no problem torturing anyone who gets in his way. Before he can get any answers Sharon Goodwin tells him that Justin will never wake up again. Now Voight no longer cares about justice, just revenge. When his CI finds the man responsible for killing his son, he sends Intelligence on a wild goose chase. Erin realizes what he did, but even though she arrives in time she can’t sway her adoptive father. Erin drives away but can’t get out of range fast enough to not hear the resonance of the bullet Voight put in the man who killed his son.

Were you surprised Voight actually crossed that line? What effect will this have on Intelligence?
