Futurama Renewed by Comedy Central

Comedy Central has ordered 26 more episodes of recently resurrected Futurama, according to Deadline. The episodes are said to be scheduled to air in the same 13 episode chunks that the current order of episodes is airing. Futurama joins fellow former Fox cartoon Family Guy as shows that have been successfully brought back from the dead and found new success in their respective new lives.

Futurama debuted in 1999 to glowing reviews but ultimately underwhelming ratings, thanks to unsteady scheduling and pre-emptions from live events. The show was ultimately canceled in 2003 before landing on Adult Swim and becoming quite a success in syndication. Fast forward to 2009 and there have been four straight-to-DVD movies and the equivalent of four new seasons of episodes. The show also recently celebrated its 100th episode.

Futurama returns to Comedy Central on June 23rd.

I love seeing a good show that was canceled fight its way back and do as well as Futurama has. Granted, it’s easier to bring back an animated show than it is a live action show, but that doesn’t take away from how nice it is to have Fry, Leela, and the gang back on TV. It gives fans of other lowly rated animated shows hope that even if their show gets canceled by a network, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the end.

How have the Comedy Central episodes of Futurama compared to the Fox episodes? Are you going to watch the second batch of 13 episodes, scheduled to air this summer?
