I had the pleasure of participating in the Nikita press room this year at Comic-Con and met stars Maggie Q, Lyndsy Fonseca, Shane West and executive producer Craig Silverstein. The cast is not only incredibly nice, they also shared a veritable plethora of spoilers with us to pass along to you.
The Black Boxes
E.P. Craig said that there are "three or four [black boxes] left, depending on who you ask" and Nikita and Michael will definitely be searching for them, but their goal has shifted a bit this season. The duo will actually be working on taking down the group who is above Division (a.k.a. Oversight).
The season will be partially about the black boxes, digging into it and decrypting its secrets and cleaning them up one by one. Craig says that the boxes contain more information than we can imagine. The remaining black box guardians have all "spread to the wind" and we'll learn more about this in episode 2.02.
New and Returning Characters
We'll meet a new character named Sean, who works for Oversight. He's sent in to supervise what's happening at Division since Oversight took back control. Craig compared him to the "Colin Ferrell character in Minority Report". In addition to looking for the flaws inside of Division, he may be a potential love interest for Alex. But Alex isn't interested in a new relationship at this time, so it's unclear whether anything will really develop between the two.
Some fans may have noticed that Alberta Watson appeared in the season 1 finale of Nikita as a member of Oversight. Craig assures us that she'll be appearing again in the season 2 premiere.
Also, some fans may be happy to know that Devon Sawa returns as Owen in the second episode of season 2 (which Maggie said is terrific episode). Maggie also shared that Owen will "weave himself into the fabric of Nikita and Michael and their world", which will be shocking. This will help solidify Owen's presence in the Nikita world.
Alex's focus this season will be on finding the man who ordered the hit on her family. Season 2 will also begin with Alex and Nikita working at cross-purposes, but their continued relationship throughout the season will have its ups and downs. Maggie says that Nikita has a lot of love for Alex and wants to make things right with her, but that she also understands that Alex may also have to travel her own path, even if it pains Nikita to watch it. And while the two are not working together anymore, expect them to run into each other occasionally as they each pursue separate paths.
Lyndsy says that Alex will have matured a lot going into season 2 and will be focusing on finding answers.
Percy and Berkoff
According to Craig, Percy "may not be moving around a lot. He may be confined to an area in Division and it's probably one of the coolest sets we built on the show." In other words, it sounds like Percy has been put in a prison within Division and is no longer in a position of power (although Shane said he's not sure how long that may last). We'll also learn more about Percy and Amanda's pasts, including the origins of Division.
Berkoff, meanwhile, will not be in Division when we return for season 2, but we'll know more about what he's doing in the premiere. Maggie hinted that Berkoff may even help Nikita and Michael in their mission.
Amanda and Division
Amanda is firmly in charge of Division when Nikita returns in the fall, and Craig actually said that she may be trying to "turn Division into a more principled place". There won't be any more missions on the side and Amanda will be playing "Oversight's good girl", but don't underestimate her because she's one scary person.
Alex will essentially be Division's "private contractor". She'll be working on her own but will also be receiving help from Division when needed. But despite Alex working for Amanda, Lyndsy warns that Alex doesn't necessarily trust Amanda.
This new couple got together in season 1 and then drove off together in the finale. While they are still going strong, don't expect smooth sailing all the way. Craig said that some wrenches will be thrown into their relationship, but they will take a while to develop. Shane said that the couple is finally together, but they're both focused on all the work they have to do, so they'll have the "normal problems in a relationship with extraordinary circumstances on the side". Expect a side order of comedy in season 2 as well.
The couple will also be on the run at the beginning of the season, going from one motel to another and switching cars constantly.
Michael will be getting more fight scenes this year and Shane said that his character will be a lot deadlier.
Maggie warned that Nikita's journey will be "huge this season". Season 2 will show us who Nikita is and why she turned into the person she is. Flashbacks will be a recurring device used in the next season. She also shared that there will be a bit of a role reversal for Michael and Nikita this year. Michael will be really focused on their mission, while Nikita will actually want to focus on her relationship with Michael and "wanting things that normal people want", even if it's not necessarily possible for her.
Season 2 and The Future of Nikita
This overarching theme of this season will be Michael and Nikita will be focusing on righting wrongs, while Alex "heads from right to wrong" as Craig put it. In addition, each of the characters will be "searching for home", however they define it.
The producers have mapped out season 2 (although things can always change along the way) and already know what the story arc for season 3 will be if the show gets renewed again next year.
