Tonight on Criminal Minds: Prentiss Evaluates Her Return to the BAU

criminal mindsTonight Criminal Minds hits the 150 episode mark and to celebrate this we are getting a twist on who the unsub is in this episode titled “Unknown Subject.” We will also get to see Prentiss’ (Paget Brewster) vulnerable side as she visits a therapist to discuss her past trauma and what it has been like to rejoin her old team after such a monumental event. Spoilers ahead.

The case of the week sees the team tracking a serial rapist in Houston, Texas known as ‘The Piano Man’ thanks to his fondness of playing music as he commits his heinous crimes. It would appear that ‘The Piano Man’ has resurfaced and is assaulting his previous victims. The case isn’t as simple as attacker goes back to his past victims though and executive producer Erica Messer discussed how they changed up the formula for the episode with TVLine. Instead, the victim turns the tables on her attacker to get revenge for the pain and suffering that he has caused, Messer said that:

“‘What if this time around a victim actually has an unsub [in captivity], and the victory will be if the team can get her to not kill somebody?’ And whether or not that happens remains to be seen.”

This revenge plot is not necessarily a revolutionary idea but it does tie in nicely with the Prentiss-centric aspect of the episode, which sees her revisiting her personal experience with Ian Doyle (Timothy V. Murphy) through her therapy sessions and what it means to be back with the BAU. Messer explains that the return to the team was vital for Prentiss and “right now she needs to be in the BAU. That gives her all the solace she needs, so she will say and do anything to make that happen.” Some like Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) did not react well to the deception of her faked death, but as last week’s episode showed this friendship appears to be back on track as Reid outlined his anxiety over his lack of achievement and Prentiss reassured him.

Some fans are hopeful for some romance for Prentiss, specifically with Hotch (Thomas Gibson) and while this isn’t likely in the near future Messer didn’t completely rule out the possibility. Both characters have been through personal trauma and Hotch has only recently taken the steps to date again with fellow triathlete Beth (Bellamy Young). Messer told TVLine that “We didn’t go the Prentiss route right now because she’s not ready; she has a lot of healing to do.” Would you like to see this romance happen or do you prefer love interests that come away from the office?

I love the way you review. Very thoro and fair and knowledgable. Yes, I was one who wanted Em and Hotch to connect…..your writing gives me hope. Messer must know that the fans want much more for ALL the parts. Why concentrate on Hotch. He needs to remember his promise to Haley. I would lose respect for him as he ignores Jack. Thanks for all this info.
