Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 Spoilers: News, Episode Descriptions and Promos

Curb Your Enthusiasm and Larry David return this Sunday, July 10 at 10 P.M on HBO and it looks like we can look forward to more awkward situations from Larry when he brings the show to New York City.

Prior trips to the Big Apple for The Producers and for a role in a Martin Scorsese film have resulted in endless problems for Larry including issues with tipping and tourist interaction (played brilliantly by Stephen Colbert). This trip looks like it will be no different as Larry David returns to our screens nearly two years after the Curb season 7 Seinfeld reunion. So why the long gap between seasons?

Favourite Curb potty mouth Susie Essman (Susie Greene) spoke to Vulture and explained David's process when it comes to agreeing to do another season:

"Well, after every season, Larry says, 'That’s it, I’m not doing another season.' After every season. And then he’ll finish editing, and the show will air, and then I’ll get a call, and he’ll say, 'I’m not promising anything, but I am letting you know I’m working on a couple of outlines. But until I get at least eight outlines, I’m not promising. I’m just letting you know I’m working on it.' And then another couple of months later I’ll get another phone call: 'I’m still not promising anything.' And then finally he’ll call me and say, 'All right, we’re doing it.' So, you know, every season he says that, and we’re the longest-running series on HBO."

The freedom to not have to come back every year with a new season is probably what helps keep Curb fresh, giving David the chance to come up with new and more outrageous scenario's for Larry to become embroiled in, even if as an audience we know that the comedy will often come from Larry breaking polite social conventions. In fact one of my favourite things about this show is that you can see how Larry will get in to bother before it has even happened, but it is watching this unfold with the knowledge of what Larry is like that makes this show a joy (albeit an awkward joy) to watch.

From the four episode descriptions you can already try and figure out what might happen in the episode, episode 3 is one that stands out as one that will see the uncomfortable humor go off the chart. Here are the descriptions for the first four episodes of season 8:

Episode 8.01 "The Divorce" (July 10):

Larry learns his lawyer isn't kosher, and rescinds a cookie order from the Girl-Scout daughter of a beleaguered sports owner.

Episode 8.02 "The Safe House" (July 17):

Larry becomes an unlikely role model for battered women; Richard Lewis' relationship with a burlesque performer is put to the test; Leon survives a case of mistaken identity.

Episode 8.03 "Palestinian Chicken" (July 24):

Larry plays 'social assassin' to the hilt at a dinner party, on the golf course, and at a Palestinian restaurant with chicken to die for.

Episode 8.04 "The Smiley Face" (July 31):

Larry vows to topple a sacred dating taboo, and regrets making concessions to his new office neighbor; Jeff's alibi to get out of a dinner backfires.

Larry is indeed a 'social assassin' who will encounter many a famous face this season, from regulars such as Wanda Sykes and Rosie O'Donnell to new members of the Curbverse such as awkward humor pro Ricky Gervais, The Sopranos Aida Turturro and legend Michael J. Fox. Fans will also be happy to know that J.B. Smoove is back as Leon and will be venturing to the East coast with the rest of the regular cast.

What we don't know is whether Larry is back with Cheryl and if the divorce in the title for episode 1 refers to them. The Seinfeld reunion special that was the focus of season 7 was orchestrated by Larry to win Cheryl back, a ploy that looked like it had worked. Unfortunately for Larry he might have ruined the whole plan by finding out the Cheryl might not "respect wood", after she left a stain on his new coffee table, did this moment remind Cheryl of why she broke up with Larry in the first place? Or is another couple getting a divorce?

Below is the promo for season 8 which shows some of the mishaps that Larry will cause and be involved in with both the general public and with those nearest and dearest to him. There is also a behind the scenes look at season 8 featuring many of the seasons regular cast and guest stars, including my own personal favourite Marty Funkhouser (Bob Einstein).

Are you looking forward to season 8 of Curb Your Enthusiasm? Let us know in the comments below.

Be sure to tune in to HBO this Sunday, July 10 at 10 P.M. to catch the latest Larry David antics.

Mini-Recap -- Curb Your Enthusiasm 1.03 "The Reunion"

Oh my god. It's finally happening, although for completely selfish reasons. A Seinfeld reunion is in the works. But there's going to be some arguing going on. Probably a lot of arguing. And lots of spaced-out Michael Richards. But then again, what's new?

After Jeff poses the question of a Seinfeld reunion, Larry decides it's time to go to NBC and tell them no once and for all. But before he goes into the meeting, he sees Cheryl, who is looking to go back into acting. While in the meeting, Larry decides to say yes to the reunion show when he has the epiphany that casting Cheryl would possibly bring them back together. The ecstatic network director gives him and Jeff Lakers tickets.

Larry goes around and makes sure the four original cast members are up for it. Jerry's reluctant to do it because reunion shows are always so corny, but Larry convinces him. Jason Alexander is all for it, especially with Larry's storyline for George having an ex-wife. He does clash with Larry over tipping a waiter, though. Larry talks to Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and while she agrees, he discovers that she lied to him about taking her daughter to a birthday party as an excuse not to meet him. And Michael Richards isn't quite sure what is going on, because he's destracted by erotic wall art at a restaurant (though he later agrees).

Larry is meanwhile angered by the poor tickets he was given by the network exec, and he curses at him, angering the exec and causing him to cancel the reunion, though his swift recognition of Lyme disease in the exec gains him his show back. All seems well until he gets a call from Jerry Seinfeld, who has already got Meg Ryan going for the part of George's ex-wife, which Larry had envisioned for Cheryl.

Recap -- Curb Your Enthusiasm 7.02 "Vehicular"

Tonight's Curb Your Enthusiasm touched on some pretty explicit themes, so read with caution.

The episode began with Larry receiving a gift from Jeff and Suzie: a GPS system. However, due to the packaging, Larry cannot open the gift, and frustatedly struggles with the package, going so far as to stab it with a butcher knife, all to no avail.

He is called upstairs by Loretta, who is relying on the excuse of cancer to persuade Larry to do mundane things, like to tell her what channel E! is on. As Larry makes her vegetable juice, he sees a doctor on Dr. Phil who claims that cancer can be caused by harmful relationships, and that she would persuade any cancer patient in a harmful relationship to leave the harmful person. Larry, seeing his chance, decides to schedule a meeting with the doctor.

At the meeting, Larry puts on a show for the doctor, being ruder and more insensitive than usual. He is ordered outside by the doctor, and immediately gets in an argument with his former neighbor when he breaks his glasses in a hug. Larry refuses to pay for the glasses until his former neighbor reveals that he has cancer.

Meanwhile, Leon tells Larry to call Alton, his friend, who is a Seinfeld fan, to wish him a happy birthday. Larry does so, but mentions that Leon thinks Alton's wife is beautiful, angering Alton. Leon confronts Larry about this, because Alton suspects an affair. Larry is shocked to discover that Leon is actually having the affair. Larry agrees to help.

At a dinner party with Jeff, Suzie, Lewis, and Lewis' new girlfriend, Larry discovers that Lewis' girlfriend had oral sex with Lewis on the drive over. Larry is standoffish to Lewis' girlfriend about this, eventually angering her. Larry lies, his excuse being that he has a cold sore and is embarrassed about it.

On the way to a speech given by the doctor soon afterward, Larry and Loretta witness what appears to be the doctor giving her husband oral sex in the car. Loretta, offended, no longer wants to listen to the doctor, and convinces Larry to turn around.

The next day, Larry returns to the doctor's office to give the invoice to his former neighbor, and is met by the doctor, who wants to have a meeting with him. She's disappointed that Loretta and Larry did not attend her speech, and Larry admits it's because of the event he witnessed earlier, prompting her to attack him.

Larry returns home to find Leon and Alton's wife outside his door. Alton is at the front door, and believes that his wife is inside. Alton's wife huddles inside Larry's car as Leon convinces Alton that there's nothing to fear. As the coast is clear, Alton's wife stands up, leading the arriving Loretta to believe the obvious. She and the rest of her family leave, leaving only Larry and Leon in the house.

That night, Larry goes for a drive, finding Jeff and Suzie in a car accident. They too have attempted to mimic Lewis and his girlfriend (who have since split up due to Larry spilling the beans) and crashed as a result. Larry goes to get his newly-purchased knife to cut Jeff's seatbelt off, but finds that he can't remove the packaging the knife was in, ending the episode.

Recap -- Curb Your Enthusiasm -- 7.01 "Funkhouser's Crazy Sister"

We've missed you, Larry David. We really have. It's been almost two years since we last saw you talking about a tickle in your anus in front of everyone at your best friend's daughter's bat mitzvah. It's been way too long. And now, you're back for ten weeks, and then you'll be gone again for God knows how long.

But where did we leave you last? Oh, yes. You were dancing with Loretta Black at the previously mentioned bat mitzvah. And then there was that montage of you and the blacks becoming one big happy, obnoxious family, with memories of Cheryl completely gone. Right?

Well, let's not say that all is as well as it seems. We pick up this year with a somewhat browbeaten Larry waiting on his girlfriend hand and foot. She's also taken control of the bedroom thermostat, making it too hot for Larry to comfortably cohabit. She and Leon argue that Larry's preferred temperature is too cold.

Larry gives up. As he goes downstairs, Auntie Rae arrives home, warning Larry about neighborhood robberies, but also discussing the results of Loretta's biopsy, which hasn't come in yet. Auntie Rae spouts her thankfulness that Larry will be at Loretta's side, though Larry is obviously much less enthusiastic.

Larry goes to talk to Jeff, and compares his plight confusingly to that of Cinderella's, with Loretta being the evil stepmother. He states that couples should have breakup clauses, and Jeff agrees, perhaps having codewords like apricot to indicate a breakup, though Larry feels that apricots are rarely good, and are a low-percentage fruit.

Suzie comes out to the garage to invite Larry to a dinner party, but he wants to know who else will be attending. Suzie refuses to tell Larry, because that's "just not done," though Larry becomes ornery. However, Suzie refuses to tell Larry, and he is forced to agree to come, without having any idea of who else is coming. Jeff asks why the two even get started arguing, making a very good point indeed. He's ignored, of course.

Larry returns home, to find Loretta's doctor there. The doctor attempts to talk to Larry about Loretta, but Larry tries to change the subject and talk about fish. The doctor then turns, and gets some lemonade out of Larry's refridgerator, which Larry objects to. Larry chastises the doctor, and the doctor angrily retorts, eventually leaving as Funkhouser walks in, telling Larry that liquids are okay to take from someone else's fridge. Funkhouser updates Larry on the status of his sister Bam Bam, who was recently removed from the mental institution. Larry asks Funkhouser if there's anything he can do, and Funkhouser takes him up on the empty gesture, much to Larry's chagrin, and tells him to come and entertain Bam Bam later that day. Larry asks if Funkhouser is going to Jeff and Suzie's dinner party, but Funkhouser wasn't invited, and is hurt that Larry was tactless enough to ask without knowing if Funkhouser is coming.

Larry and Jeff go to meet Bam Bam (Catherine O'Hara), and the meeting is of course awkward. Larry leaves to go to the bathroom, eventually going into the kitchen and making a sandwich, leaving Jeff and Bam Bam alone. When he returns, he discovers that the two are in an upstairs bedroom, having sex. On the ride home, Larry admonishes Jeff for having sex with a mental patient, though Jeff argues that she's not a mental patient.

Larry later arrives at Jeff and Suzie's party, where Jeff tells Larry that Funkhouser called, angry about not being invited, and Suzie was forced to invite Funkhouser and Bam Bam. Larry, meanwhile, goes to talk to Loretta's doctor, who is at the party, and is surprised to find that the doctor is gay, though he callously expresses this surprise and offends the doctor and his partner.

Funkhouser approaches Larry and Jeff soon after, and thanks them, saying that the visit put Bam Bam into good spirits. He makes them promise to do it again, which they reluctantly do in order to get to go eat.

At the dinner table, Bam Bam and Jeff flirt rather obviously, though Jeff is careful to hide this from Suzie. Bam Bam begins revealing that Larry ate from their fridge, causing the doctor to call Larry a hypocrite, and then reveals that she slept with Jeff. Suzie is at first outraged, but they are able to convince her that Bam Bam is crazy. Funkhouser apologizes for his sister and says that she is being sent back to the institution.

Larry gets a call reminding him to pick up Loretta's prescription. He goes to a restaurant to get some food on the way, and runs into Cheryl and Wanda Sykes, who booked a reservation under his name. Cheryl and the no-fly underwear guy are no longer seeing each other, Cheryl reveals. Larry and Cheryl go outside for better light to read their menus buy, and Cheryl tells Larry that she liked him when he wasn't at home a lot. He promises to change, but gets a call from Auntie Ray telling him that the doctor is on his way to the house with the biopsy results.

Frantic to get home so that he can break up with Loretta before he finds out she has cancer, Larry abruptly leaves Cheryl and speeds home, but is stopped by Bam Bam, and together they witness a car being stolen. As the cops pull up and begin to question Larry, the doctor beats Larry to his own house. Larry follows him in sometime later, and discovers that Loretta indeed has cancer. The episode closes with Larry discovering that he is to spend the next four years caring for Loretta constantly, and he forlornly looks ahead into space.

It's finally back. After almost two years of no Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David's awkward comedy is returning for a season seven. The half-hour comedy, which features David as a misanthropic, fictional version of himself, will return on September 20, with the episode "Funkhouser's Crazy Sister" to kick off the new season.

The show was assumed to be cancelled after not being renewed for the 2008-2009 season, but the show, known for it's long off-season, was finally announced to return just a few months ago, in order to take over the first half of the Sunday spot left open when True Blood's second season will end on the thirteenth, with Bored to Death taking on the second half of the 9:00 - 10:00 timeslot.

The previews for the new season look absolutely hilarious. And, as I posted in an earlier newsbrief, a reunion of the Seinfeld cast is planned for the show. David, who co-created Seinfeld with Jerry Seinfeld, will certainly not amke the reunion a conventional one, but it will be great to see the four stars of the sitcom (Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards) reunite on the small screen for the first time in a long time. And I'm still holding out for a Wayne Knight appearance as well.

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM stars “Seinfeld” co-creator David as himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his life. Featuring real-life celebrities playing themselves, the episodes are improvised by the actors. The series also stars Cheryl Hines as David’s wife Cheryl, Jeff Garlin as David’s manager Jeff and Susie Essman as Jeff’s wife Susie.

The new season finds Larry continuing to cope with the aftermath of Cheryl’s departure, even as his life remains intertwined with the Black family. Guest stars this season include series veterans Ted Danson, Bob Einstein, Vivica A. Fox, Richard Lewis, Rosie O’Donnell, J.B. Smoove and Mary Steenburgen, plus Sharon Lawrence, Catherine O’Hara, Meg Ryan, Elisabeth Shue, Christian Slater, Sherry Stringfield and the stars of “Seinfeld” – Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards.

Upcoming episodes:

Episode #61: “Funkhouser’s Crazy Sister”
Debut: SUNDAY, SEPT. 20 (9:00-9:30 p.m. ET/PT)
Larry (Larry David) attempts a preemptive breakup with an ailing Loretta (Vivica A. Fox), and learns with Jeff (Jeff Garlin) that you can’t make an “empty gesture” to a Funkhouser.
Directed by Larry Charles.

Episode #62: “Vehicular Fellatio”
Debut: SUNDAY, SEPT. 27 (9:00-9:30 p.m.)

Larry deliberately tries to annoy Loretta, against the advice of a renowned doctor. Later, Larry dooms Richard Lewis’ new relationship, and ends up profiting from Leon’s (J.B. Smoove) indiscretion with the wife of a depressed pal.
Directed by Alec Berg.
