Shocker! Damages Saved by DirecTV

It had been confirmed. FX's Damages had been lowered into the ground, a eulogy given, the casket covered, and we were all leaving the funeral when DirecTV arrived at the scene and announced that Damages wasn't really dead.

Yeah, it's the late-breaking news that nobody really expected, but Glenn Close's Patty Hewes isn't done fighting -- DirecTV did for Damages what it did for Friday Night Lights and rescued it from the TV wasteland of cancellation. And not only has it resurrected the once-dead series (which was ambling along with less than a million viewers per episode), but it has given the series an additional order of twenty episodes -- two seasons! That means we'll be seeing at least through season five of the series, if it's not picked up for even more episodes after it begins its run on DirecTV's channel the 101.

The run will begin in 2011, though no date is for certain. It's a rare occasion for a show to be pulled from the brink like that by another network -- it's only happened three times that I can remember (with Friday Night Lights, Southland, and now Damages).

The story, broken by Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, said that the news was breaking -- very, very new -- and that we should start to see more on the story soon. You can check back to TVOvermind for more details on the surprise renewal of the series.

I guess you could add 'Futurama' to your list of shows saved by another network and possible even 'Family Guy'.

This is great news. I was afraid this show was going to die before its brilliance was recognized en masse, but if this pans out, we don't have to wonder what could've been like we do with Arrested Development and Veronica Mars.
