Well it was disturbing, but not a total shock that Sugar Ray Leonard was sent home from Dancing with the Stars this week. I have to admit I framed out my article before the show, but it was all about Kendra Wilkinson. So sure was I that she would be sent packing. I’ll save that work, because I know her time will be up soon. Incidentally, when Brooke Burke asked Kendra what caused her to be "off" last night, she blamed "hormones". I bet the pro female dancers loved hearing that.
Yes, we knew Sugar Ray’s dancing wasn’t the strongest of the bunch, and apparently, neither was his fan base. Voters can always save someone with low scores, just as they must have with Kendra. As I said in yesterday’s recap, I think the childlike quality of his waltz hurt him. Knowing his scores so far had been weak, Sugar should have realized he needed a powerful performance to lift himself up. Prancing around like a “sugar plum fairy” as Len called him, was a set back from his strong paso doble of week 3.
Chelsea & Mark's Viennese Waltz was chosen as the encore performance and this was unexepected. Typically a routine that was subject to criticism such as what Len dished out isn't chosen, because the judges have a say in the choice. But, Len's score of 8 overrides his personal resentment of their modern take on a 300 year old dance. Nevertheless, Chelsea & Mark found themselves in jeopardy up until the last minute. This makes no sense, since Tom repeatedly says the two couples deemed safe at the end do not necessarily represent the bottom two. I guess it's just mind games on the part of the producers?
The evening's highlights were the Swan Lake performance in the Macy's Star of Dance segment and of course, the phenomenal Jennifer Hudson. Next week's performance show takes on a patriotic theme, featuring dances to songs saluting America. Dancing with the Stars week 5 performance show airs on Monday, April 18 at 8 p.m. (EST) on ABC.
