Dancing with the Stars Season 13 Stars & Pros

Dancing with the StarsThe Dancing with the Stars Season 13 cast is almost ready for prime-time, and we have a few new pros, some questionable ‘stars’and some unconventional pairings. In a new but not so surprising twist, they have bumped up three members of last season’s The Troupe to become front and center pros. Who didn’t see that coming? Aside from our beloved long time pros getting tired and needing help with the pro dance segments, this is an opportunity for the show to break in new, younger blood to keep it fresh.

DWTS is sticking with their tried and true formula of athletes, singers, actors, talk show hosts, a controversial celebrity and the token ‘who?’cast member. And of course, within this group of ‘stars’is at least one season train wreck. Let’s break down the cast and dish on this a bit.

Elisabetta Canalis & Valentin Chmerkovskiy: Elisawho? Being George Clooney’s former girlfriend makes her a star? While they were an item I read somewhere that she doesn’t speak English. Can you see Elisabetta and Bruno arguing in Italian? This should be fun. DWTS welcomes Val as one of the new pros. Besides having the distinction of being Maks’brother, Val is also a retired competitive ballroom champ. And where do retired competitors go? Why, Dancing with the Stars of course! Whether or not they can communicate, Elisabetta is in good hands.

Chaz Bono & Lacey Schwimmer: Transgender son of Cher. Apparently this makes Chaz a celebrity, as well as this season’s most controversial cast member. Chaz is DWTS’ answer to the same sex dancing controversy stirred up earlier this summer. Not really same sex, because Chaz is legally a male now, but, the transgender issue is causing enough chatter out there. Chaz’s press is overshadowing everyone else’s right now, and all eyes will be on this couple during the premiere. The press attention could turn Chaz into a train wreck, but something tells me he is tough enough to face the music. Rest assured Lacey has the tough, adaptable personality to handle the seemingly odd nature of this pairing as well, the first of its kind on the show. Nobody expects Chaz to get far, but come on, give the guy a chance.

Dancing with the Stars Season 13David Arquette & Kym Johnson: Celebrity party boy. Can David take his part in a serious dance competition, uh, seriously? It’s hard to picture him in ballroom shoes without a keg hat, so he could easily be this season’s train wreck. At the very least, David will keep Season 12 winner Kym entertained. After that nasty spill last season, she can use a few laughs.

Kristin Cavallari & Mark Ballas: Young actress. Does anyone over 21 know who she is? This pairing was so predictable. Mark ALWAYS gets the cute young things. Enough said.

Nancy Grace & Tristan McManus: Talk show host #1. Nancy Grace? Holy cow. Nancy is the scariest lawyer on TV, as she devotes most of her shows to grilling and fileting guests, especially parents of missing children. When I can’t find my teenager for like an hour, I always yell “you will not make me end up on the Nancy Grace show!’This woman is frightening. If Nancy’s real personality is anything like her talk show persona, this could be a train wreck. Tristan made his debut in The Troupe last season. Though there is about a 30 year age difference between the two, we have yet to see much of Tristan’s personality, so the jury is out on whether he can handle Nancy. I had tough as nails Nancy pegged for Maks, but Maks needs a break. More on that later.

Ricki Lake & Derek Hough: Talk show host #2 and actress. And ah, the return of Derek Hough. But, once again, Derek is paired with someone with some prior dance experience. Even I’m suspicious now. Ricki’s dancing role in Hairspray is sure to be used against her if she gets far along, as was Dirty Dancing against Derek’s season 11 partner and co-champ Jennifer Grey.

Robert Kardashian & Cheryl Burke: Reality TV star #1. This is almost too cute for words. He’s a hunk and Cheryl gets a break from the athletes and their egos. Reality TV ego? Maybe, but Robert seems to have a gentle and overall nice personality, if the Kardashian TV shows are anything to go by. The question is, can he outperform sister Kim, who was voted off in week 2 of Season 7?

Carson Kressley & Anna Trebunskaya: Reality TV star #2. It could be more interesting to watch Carson, fashion diva that he is, cat fighting with wardrobe and stylists backstage than twirling across the ballroom floor. Anna returns to DWTS for her 8th shot at the Mirror Ball, and she’s always a pleasure to watch.

J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff: The token ABC actor. Now that All My Children is almost off the air, DWTS is better than nothing at all. And, Karina is back! I knew ABC didn’t give a hoot about those Playboy photos.

Chaz Bono Dancing with the StarsRon Artest & Peta Murgatroyd: Athlete #1. I guess Ron wasn’t holding out much hope for a return to the basketball court this year. Peta is one of the new pros who debuted as a Troupe dancer last season. DWTS fans may recall her waltz with fellow Troupe member Tristan. And of course, another blonde in the cast never hurts, does it? Athletes are known for bringing big egos to the show, and as this is Peta’s first time with a ‘star’partner, let’s hope she can handle him.

Hope Solo & Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Athlete #2. A nice break for Maks. Kirstie Alley was a lot of woman to handle, and I don’t mean weight. I mean personality and baggage. An athlete could be a positive departure from loony (but loveable) actresses and pop star divas for Maks. He’s an iron strong teacher and dancer, so it will be very cool to watch him as he is challenged mentally and physically by an athlete.

Chynna Phillips & Tony Dovolani: Singer/actress. Chynna has been out of the public eye for a while, except to surface briefly to almost divorce her husband, actor Billy Baldwin. She also made headlines while being treated for anxiety. Who better then, to be partnered with than the gentle and loveable Tony, who returns for a 12th shot at that elusive Mirror Ball. Although Chynna’s recent history has the makings of train wreck TV, personally I think Chynna’s sister Mackenzie is the one we need to see on the show.

Sorry, I can't do it. After all these years. I've thoroughly enjoyed DWTS for many years, but I'm done. As is the show.

    • Albie

This season's going to be packed with surprises. I can feel it. All this negative press about Chaz has concealed a great, young, and vibrant cast that will be very competitive.

  • Dorothy

I also have enjoyed DWTS for many seasons. I have considered not watching this season. I don't know why the show continues to try to one-up itself with some type of controversy. I'm sorry, but I do not want to see a woman dancing with another woman. I am hoping that she/he will be eliminated quickly so that I can watch and enjoy the show for the dancing.

  • zinman

You have just lost me as a follower… I have followed the show throughout the years but not now… Chaz or whatever she is, no way…

  • Gloria

I enjoy the show but as others have said I am not happy with having Chaz Bono on the show. Yes, she has a right to her lifestyle but I don't condone it and as far as I'm concerned she is a she. I am sick and tired of having these "alternative" lifestyles shoved down my throat. I will watch it because the others have a right to our support and I am soooooooo glad to see Derek back.

  • JACKIE

I THINK CHAZ WILL DO REAL WELL. BEING A MAN HE IS AT LEAST FACING THE PUBLIC AND BEING SELF CONFIDENT. AS CHASTITY AND A FEMALE HE WAS INTROVERTED AND UNSURE . NOW, HE IS WILLING TO OPEN UP AND BE HIMSELF AND LOVE HIMSELF UNLIKE CHASTITY

  • Squeak

Great show. Can Chaz dance and entertain? I for one am curious to find out. Nancy G? Why not. Ron? So far the hoops guys haven't quite put it together on the dance floor. Ricki L should be a tough act to follow. Anywayz, I'll be watching with my popcorn.

  • Cheryl

Why don't they just rename the show "Dancing With The Joe Schmoe"?

Chaz, Nancy Grace, Rikki Lake, Kardashian, Cressley–Wow talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. This years DWTS takes the "inane" cake! Never heard of the rest of the "stars". I think that putting Chaz on (I hope she can stand the heat) is a really shameful attempt of DWTS to increase viewership. (I'll watch, just like ogling a car wreck), but doubt if I'll continue to watch after she/he gets the boot. George Clooneys EX girlfriend ?????????–What's with that???? Obviously their idea of a "star" and mine are by far two different things.

  • Jen

Seems pretty boring. Not one decent star this year…

  • Lionel

My wife (100% female) and I have watched the show from season one. This will be the first season we will miss. There are no stars of note on the show this season, and the inclusion of Chastity "Chaz" Bono was the clincher. My wife and I do not care what she thinks of herself or the way she has mutilated herself, neither can she or anyone else on this planet change the chromosomes that made her a her – she was born female and that is what she is – labeling her a "him" is just feeding her sickness. As for us, we will be checking out the new lineup for Monday and Tuesday on CBS and NBC. So long DWTS.

If ignorance is bliss, those belittling Chaz Bono must be an extremely happy bunch of idiots. Many of you say “I don’t care about his choice of lifestyle…” but clearly you do. If you truly didn’t care, you wouldn’t have said anything in the first place. If you don’t care, try indifference and keep your mouth shut. Expending the energy to comment simply proves that you do, in fact, care.

My boyfriend is a transgender man. Before passing judgment, I’d invite you to take a walk in his shoes. Imagine if you woke up one morning in the body of the opposite sex, with no way to get out. How would you feel? What would you think, every time you look in the mirror at a face and a body that does not belong to you? How would you cope with the world around you? He has lived this way his entire life.

I can tell you one thing, BEING TRANSGENDER IS NOT A CHOICE. For those of you who think it is, you are sadly mistaken. My boyfriend has known he’s a man since he was a toddler but over time, through the bias of societal norms, he was forced to “fit the mold” of the female gender. It wasn’t until he graduated high school and went to college that he found out that there are other people out there, just like him. Lots of people.

If you saw him walking down the street today, you would NEVER be able to tell he was born biologically female. He is the strongest PERSON I have ever met. He has become the man he is meant to be despite the overwhelming ignorance and intolerance he’s faced (from a world overpopulated with people like you). Would you be strong enough to do the same?

DWTS is just a TV show (one I have never before paid attention to, but WILL this season). You have hundreds of channels to choose from, pick a different one.

In closing, I offer my condolences for your ignorance. Because you CHOOSE to think the way you do, there is so much in life you will miss. Consider looking beyond the end of your own nose, there is a whole world out there. You just have to step outside of your comfort zone to see it.

I am 64, a Christian and married female. I am saddened at some of the responses.

I do not always agree with peoples life choices, but it there choice to make and I have do not have the right to judge them for it.

First the show is about people who are not professional dancers progressing with the help of pros. If they are not big name celebrities, who cares. It is a joy to get to see people have fun regardless of whom they are. I have enjoyed DWTS every year, thinking this season will be boring at first, but finding out it was great entertainment to see who really improved.

Because I am open minded, I will always enjoy the show for the dancing competition, and not be a part of the gossip and judgmental crowd.

    • Nikki

I am also a Christian woman, and I agree with everything that you said!! I think that so many people spend their time judging others that they forgot the reason Jesus came! How ashamed he would be of His own people who show hate instead of love! Enjoy the show tonight, I will be as well!

  • Chris

I love DWTS and watch it faithfully. I don't watch it for the stars — I don't particularly care which celebrities are on, I just love to watch the dancing and it's entertaining.

I don't understand why people always have to make cracks about how most of these people aren't "real stars." It's true that often I have never heard of many of them. They are former stars and "B" list celebrities. But really? Being on this show requires a huge commitment of time and effort. These people practice typically 8 hours a day and more. What "A" list star has the time for that? You're never going to see someone like Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, or Nicole Kidman on the show. They don't have TIME – they have far too much else going on in their busy lives.

    • Nikki

Agree completely with what you just said! I just think that people look for a reason to pick the show apart, but then secretly still watch!

  • KATHY

There is so much hate in the world. DWTS is just entertainment, who cares who is who, or what is what. Lets all enjoy a program without being so critical.

  • Martha

Have been looking forward to DWTS and cannot wait for tonight's opening performances. It's always fun, always great and everyone works tremendously hard to provide this entertainment for us. It's sad that we have so many closed-minded hypocrits who proclaim to be Christians – If they were truly Christians they would either avoid making hurtful comments or be far more accepting.

  • Bill

I will not be watching and for you so called christians you should really read your bible. Jesus died on the cross for our sins I don't think that means we can keep on commiting sins and all is forgiven.I don't think that I can explain this to my grandkids.

    • Nikki

Bill, I am a christian, and I read my bible. I would never say that it's ok to "keep on sinning" as u would say. But can u honestly say to yourself that you do not sin? Have u ever lied? Jesus calls that a liar. Have u ever looked at a woman and thought she was attractive? That is lust, and if you are married, it is considered adultry. Have u ever in your life went over the speed limit or ran a red light? That is breaking the law, and in turn SINNING! Do you not know that God said that if you break one of my commandments you have broken them all? Did Jesus not say that all sin is the same and none is greater than the other? We are ALL sinners in this world my friend. No one is perfect or without sin, except Jesus. If you would even consider thinking that you are, well then that in itself is sin. Chaz Bono is a sinner, yes, no doubt, but so are we all. To speak negativly about him, is to judge him, and that is not for you or I to do. Only Jesus Himself has the right to pass judgement on Chaz. I am sure that his/her day will come when he/she stands before Jesus and plead's his/her case, in the meantime, who are we to judge. We are to live and walk in LOVE. Didnt He say that is his greatest command? That we love? Love covers a multitude of sins, and maybe if we start with love, we start to understand and pray for the world, and then we see change. Not by blogging on here how much u dislike someone for their choices. Try praying for him. Prayer works. God Bless you sir, and take care.

  • Erin

I'm wondering where a few of my fave pros are.. like Chelsie and Louis. Hope they'll return in the future.

  • Deb

I think that this season's star selection is nothing less than stellar. There is a certain vulnerability in each and to put themselves out there in front of millions to have the layers peeled away like they do – God, they are courageous. Elisabetta was the only one I couldn't connect with – she just seemed unlikable. The dancing is entertaining, the set is spectacular, the costumes still crazy….I have my favorite but am holding on to that secret for now. Love, love, love the pros and partners.
