Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars – Finalists Chosen

Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars had yet another double elimination tonight, and this time it was to decide  the final three couples that would compete for the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy in the finals.  Were the results what anyone would have expected?  Hardly!  One of the most popular champions, eliminated.  One of the under dogs, on to compete in the finale.  Your predictions (and ours?), no bueno! Let’s take a look at what, and who, went down tonight.

First of all, let’s just get this out of the way:  Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough are safe and will be in the Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars finals.  I don’t think there was ever a question here, Shawn is favored to win for good reasons.

Now for the completely unexpected:  Olympic champ Apolo Ohno and his pro partner Karina Smirnoff. Eliminated.  Yes, you read that correctly.  This has to be near the top of the all time unexpected DWTS eliminations of all time.  We were certainly expecting Apolo to battle into the finals, this loss has to be disappointing for the highly competitive Ohno.  I mean, he’s virtually been deprived a ranking here, DWTS doesn’t honor anyone below third place.

Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani are also making it into the finals.  This is as close as Melissa has ever been to Dancing With the Stars victory.  Does she have a chance to win it all?

Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke.  Well, Emmitt has kind of muddled through the season with outstanding charisma and completely middle of the road scores.  The championship always seemed a little lofty of a goal, but it still seemed like making to the final three was a given for one of DWTS’s most beloved champions.  No dice.  In a shocking turn of events, Emmit was bested by …

Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy.  I have to admit, I’m struggling with this.  Kelly is Dancing With the Stars first champion, so it makes sense she would make it to the final three.  Still, there have been times where she has been in jeopardy throughout the season, so it would not have been surprising to see her eliminated tonight.  Imagine if she won?  First champ ever, first All-Stars champ ever.  What a boon.
