ABC to End Desperate Housewives After Next Season

In 2004, ABC underwent a pretty remarkable renaissance, going from network also-ran to total powerhouse, thanks to the addition of three massive hits. Last season, the first of the triumvirate, Lost, ended things after six seasons of mystery and intrigue and it looks like a second show is about to close up shop.

Deadline is reporting that ABC is set to end Desperate Housewives after next season, which will be its 8th. No particular reason was given for the decision, especially since it reportedly shocked cast members and the show had an option for a 9th season. Creator Marc Cherry had originally planned the show to go 9 seasons, but he has already left the show to focus on developing new projects for the network. Cherry’s first endeavor, Hallelujah, didn’t receive a pick-up in May, but there has been talks of retooling the show for the upcoming pilot season.

Desperate Housewives debuted in 2004 to strong reviews and even stronger commercial success, culminating in award wins, magazine covers, and launching (or re-launching) the careers of its (then) five main cast members. Following the lives of a group of women in a small suburban community after their friend commits suicide, the show has walked the line between campy satire and dark mystery for its entire duration, often intertwining the two with great success.

If you want to check out the last chapter of the ladies of Wisteria Lane, Desperate Housewives debuts its last season on Sunday, September 25th at 9:00.

Do you think this is the right time for Desperate Housewives to end? If you were in charge of the show, how would you wrap everything up? What would you like to see each of the Housewives do after the show finishes its run?
