It is my belief that Jacob/the Island told John that in order to save the island he must kill himself, but I think it is a test of his faith. I believe that after Locke kills himself in the real world he will become even stronger on the island, more directly connected to it (see: Obi Wan Kenobi).
As for there being two of him, I doubt it- at least not physically. if Locke is on the island after being dead in the real world, it is likely some kind of spirit or ghost, like Christian. Also, if Jack is "the one" I am out of here- I hate Jack, and curse at the screen every time he is on it. Nuts, I just realized that if Locke is Obi Wan in my analogy that has to make Jack Luke, which means he is the one

Your comparison to Obi wan made me picture all the dead like Claire, Jin?, Christian etc in the last scene of the series ,smiling, ghost like, clapping their hands to some celebratory jungle music like the end of Return of the Jedi

While the explanations were off the theory was spot on. It was, actually, pretty obvious.
