It looks like Amy Pond might become the Doctor's longest-running companion since the show restarted on the BBC back in 2005. In an interview with Zap2It, actress Karen Gillan confirmed that she would be returning for the seventh series Doctor Who, giving her a tenure of three years as a regular companion.
"I am going to be coming back, yes," Gillan confirmed. "That's the first time I've said that today!"
There's no word yet on whether Arthur Darvill, who plays Amy's husband Rory Williams, will be returning for series seven as well. Matt Smith, who portrays the Doctor, will be returning for the seventh series (his third as well). I'd previously expressed my concerns about Gillan's return, so I'm glad to see that we'll be getting at least one more year of Pond. She's been a fan favorite since her introduction, and the evolution of her character (and of Darvill's character) has been a lot of fun to watch.
We last saw Amy on the show grappling with the revelation that her infant daughter had been kidnapped by the villainous Madame Kovarian -- and that her infant daughter would grow up to be the Doctor's future lover, River Song (Alex Kingston).
Doctor Who will return for the second half of its sixth series in September with the episode "Let's Kill Hitler."
Other sites have said that she and the actor who plays Rory are leaving but may return occasionally.
