Doctor Who: River Song and the Twelfth Doctor?

Here's an interesting bit of news for you Doctor Who fans out there. Actress Alex Kingston, who plays the mysterious River Song on the hit BBC sci-fi series, appeared on BBC Breakfast earlier this week and shared a few interesting bits about her character's relationship with the Doctor, hinting that her relationship with the time traveller might not be restricted to just his tenth and eleventh incarnations.

“[River] met a Doctor in the future - which is my past - and that Doctor is a person [she] had a very strong relationship with. But it may not necessarily be this Doctor.”

Granted, Kingston was speaking with uncertainty ("I don't know," she admitted) due to the high secrecy that showrunner Steven Moffat shrouds the series in. But if Kingston has reason to believe that her time on the show might extend past Matt Smith's tenure on the series, maybe we should consider that as well.

It was recently revealed on the show that the character of River Song is the daughter of the Doctor's current companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill).

Doctor Who's sixth series will return in September with "Let's Kill Hitler," the conclusion to the two-part story begun with the show's midseason finale, "A Good Man Goes to War."

Its been long established since the character first appeared that she has encountered many incarnations of the doctor from the future and now she is supposedly able to regenerate she could be around for as long as the Doctor is.

I thought it was pretty clear in the cliffy that Riversong and this Doctor had a relationship.  He said you and me, and she nodded.  What's not clear about that?  It seems to indicate that at some point she and this doctor have a relationship, whether its in both their futures or in the past.  I really like Riversong and hope she sticks around as a companion for the Doctor, a companion that can travel with and regenerate like him; sometimes they're together, sometimes not.  It'd be cool.

    • Clive says:

River Song might be a companion, but she won't regenerate like him – she died in an episode back in series 4, looking exactly like she does now…

      • dorea says:

she is able to regenarate but the thing that killed her in the fourth season woud have also killed the docter (i recently rewatched the episode becouse i was confussed abouth this as well) so in that episode she gave her life so that the doctor wouldnt die..

        • Renata says:

Yeah and even though we know when she dies and that she will not regenerate from her current body, it is still possible that we could meet past incarnations of her that could go on for a while since they are moving in opposite directions through time. We've seen when the Doctor meets River for the first time, but we have yet to see when River meets  the Doctor for the first time. They could draw it out for a while.

VOMIT. the mysterious river song?? we all know who she is, the daughther of those two poor ponds, the future doctor's wife (vomit), a fat ugly perv woman who never goes away. never. the only mistery here is why she's still around when she single handedly destroyed this show. FIRE MOFFAT NOW.

  4. James Smith says:

I believe this is possible. If her book is correct, she has a lot of a adventures to go. To rip doctor, are you sick? Shes the best thing in the show now. She's very cheeky and smart. No one said you have to watch.

I'm glad that the "who is River Song" thing is done. However, I'm puzzled, if she is a Time Lord i.e. when she dies she just changes (as she did as a little girl in 6.2), why does the "Future" Doctor feel he needs to make it so that she is put into the hard drive of the library? In addition she makes it sound as though the first meeting Ten is "so very young". so far it's only been 2 yrs, which makes me think something has gone wrong with the Time Lord's timeline. I do however think that the only reason River knows the Doctor's name is because she can read Galifraian and I think his "name" is on his crib. she read it while she was explaining things and uses it later. I do wonder however if the eye patch woman will also turn out to be River, she stayed far from the baby except when she was using the plastic baby as a decoy. Just some ideas.

This may be a huge stretch, but if River's Time Lordish abilities are similar to primitive Time Lords, could she somehow be the very first one? So if she and the doctor had a child…. well, crazy stuff would go down. The doctor would have destroyed his people, and helped create them at the same time. :)
