Doctor Who: The 11 Best Moments of Series 6

9. Stormageddon and Not Mum ("Closing Time")

Moving from the tearjerking to the laughmongering, one of the funniest moments of the season came in the very next episode, "Closing Time," which featured the Doctor returning to visit Craig (James Corden), whom he had previously lived with in "The Lodger." When he returned, Craig and Sophie were together with a child, a little baby named Alfie. Only he didn't like being called Alfie. He preferred the moniker "Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All."

The funniest scene of the episode involved Alfie -- erm, Stormageddon -- revealing how he views other people. Craig is "Not Mum," the Doctor is "Also Not Mum," and everyone else are "peasants." There's something funny about a condescending baby, and this episode pulled it off so well that I really want Stormy to be the Doctor's next companion, now that Rory and Amy have left the TARDIS. A grown-up version of Stormy would be just great. Make it happen, Moffat.

10. Look Into My Eye ("The Wedding of River Song")

These final two entries are actually both from the same scene, but they're so distinct that it's difficult not to split them up. Both are from the final scene, in which the Doctor returns Dorium's head to its resting place. As Dorium realizes with shock that the Doctor is actually still alive, he asks how. The Doctor tells him; it was the Teselecta that saved him. We then see events play out again -- and, in typical Moffat style, what was once sad becomes lighthearted. The Doctor sadly leaves the Teselecta's offer for help unanswered before popping his head back in the door, grinning wildly and saying, "Now that you mention it..."

Instead of telling River Song his name (which we know he'll do later), he whispers for her to look into his eye, where she sees the Doctor, still wearing Craig's Stetson, waving to her and gesturing to the TARDIS behind him. It's a joyful reimagining of a sad scene, and that's what made it so brilliant. Also, maybe it was the Doctor's wording: "A Doctor in a Doctor suit," he says.

11. Doc-tor Who? ("The Wedding of River Song")

But not all is joyful. As the Doctor leaves, Dorium reminds him that he faces even more tribulations in the future, including "The Fall of the Eleventh," which likely refers to the Eleventh Doctor's regeneration. While I hope that we won't be seeing that for a few more years, it's the final question that kind of actually got me excited for that occurrence.

"Doctor Who?" Dorium calls out after him, enunciating every syllable. "Doc-tor Who?"

It's great that the show is finally returning to the major question of its title, though it's unsure whether it can ever be answered. After all, wouldn't answering the show's title necessitate the need for a name change? But who knows? With the fiftieth anniversary special coming up in 2013, anything can happen. And after this great final scene, you can bet I'm onboard.

Rory Williams is indeed a badass

  2. scribejay says:

i think the Cyberfleet blowing up *was* the Doctor's message, actually. But Rory's definitely finding his inner badass. This is not the same guy who once said "Deadly aliens! Aliens… of death! And now you're taking your clothes off! Those clothes belong to people, you know!"

  3. Guest says:

Being a mum, I loved all the baby/breastfeeding humor this series!

  4. Rob says:

Rory Williams is bad ass. Last episode proved that. Ignoring the pain and making a last stand in an attempt to save the woman he loves. Even though in this reality she did not know it.

  5. SpazzyMcGee says:

For once, I agree with an online "best of" list. Great job!

  6. Aman says:

Really? No River Song revealing that she is Amy and Rory's daughter? C'mon…

  7. Karen says:

I don't think the show eve will/should reveal the Doctor's name. But I think on a more existential level, exploring "Doctor Who" could be a fabulous story arc for the next couple of seasons. Who is the Doctor? What kind of man is he? Is he the Oncoming Storm? Is he the feared warrior Melody Pond was trained to kill? Is he the healer who "makes people better?" Explore the light and dark parts of his character. Wonderful story-telling opportunity without ever revealing something as mundane as his name.

  8. Jim Mann says:

I think it was a good series, but I don't think it was as good as the two best series of new Doctor Who: series 4 (still my choice as best to date) and series 5.

I also found the ending, while filled with great moments, a tad unsatisfying, as it did not answer one of the key questions the Doctor states are still unanswered at the end of series 5: what caused the Tardis to explode?

Reading various reviews and comments, it is amazing to me how wonderfully Doctor Who inspires, provokes and entertains. I join the voices that think that this 6th series was incredible fun and agree with your top 11, although there are many other scenes I would have added to make it an even longer list.

We are huge Matt Smith fans in our household. Any talk of "the fall of the Eleventh" provokes concern since we think Matt has been truly amazing as the Eleventh doctor . If we can influence "the powers that be" to keep him longer than his current contract then I (and my family) am all for it!

  10. MadTimelady says:

How can you forget about River Song revealing her identity?? I thought that was absolutely mindblowing and brilliant!

And the fact that the doctor got MARRIED. The Tardis no longer is his wife!

  11. Michelle says:

I do not think that 'The Fall of the Eleventh' refers to Matt Smith that I'm afraid, is far too obvious for Steven Moffat.

  12. Rayne says:

I agree with the above comments, that River's identity reveal should have been included in the top moments list. It's one of the scenes that actually brought tears to my eyes. I made sure not to see any spoilers before watching that episode, so it was a GREAT reveal. Just the way the Doctor and River said 'Hello' to each other after the Doctor realized who she was, was one of the most touching moments in the season, and one of the episodes I've watched over and over again just to ride the emotional roller coaster it creates and inspires.
I would also say, though, that as a red herring reffering to the flesh, I couldn't accept the idea that the Doctor would use that to fake his death scene. After all, the flesh either melted or just died. They couldn't provide the auroric regeneration effects that started after the Doctor was shot. Good try, though. The tescelecta's introduction made a lot more sense as the stand in for the Doctor getting shot when it was introduced, since it could mimic anyone, and just possibly anything. (including making itself sweat, which was the tip off for me).
The entire season was incredibly great, though! Brilliant, even. I am excitedly looking forward to the next series, to see how the Doctor steps back into the shadows. It seems improbably, since he can't help his curiousity to meddle with events where he sees fit. He'll probably have to have companions to do the meddling in his place, so he's not seen. And Rory's growth from a bumbling flunky into his badass self was great character development. If he didn't resent the Doctor so much, I'd say he'd make a great continuing companion. After 'The Girl Who Waited,' I honestly thought he might end up being the mysterious astronaut, if it weren't for all the reveals about River killing a very good man in half the episodes she was in.

I agree with everyone that said the reveal of river song should be in the list. When i watched that part my jaw literally dropped! River song is an amzing chracter and for that one scene to not be in this list is shocking and dissapointing. I dont think the minitour dying was that sad or that important but whatever. Personally he whole episode of the God complex , for me, was point less. but thats my opinion. I almost cried watching when the young amy has to leave the old amy. It was so sad and touching. My top three favorite parts in series 6 is when the doctor gets shot, when the doctor and river song get married and when river song reveald who she is. I love when the doctor gets shot cuz it was such a surprise when it happened and i dont think any expected it. I was like " how do you start a season with the main character diying?". When the doctor and riversong got married i thought it was so sweet and i thought it was funny because that meand rory amy the doctor and riversong were all related! The doctor and river should have a baby! that would be so cute! The NEW doctor ! And when riversong revealed who she was i was so surprised and but i kinda had a spoiler cuz i accidentally read an article online that said something about it but i stopped reading so i had an idea but i still was very surprised! another thing i liked about this doctor is that the 11th doctor is more childish and funny. David Tenant wasnt that great of the doctor. he was to… serious. ONe thing i hated about this season is the Mid Season Break!!!! It annoyed me so much! " we will be back in mid summer." WHAT THE HECK! who does that! BLAH! Idk if the other 4 season did it when matt smith wasnt the doctor but it really irritated me.

  14. Jim says:

Thankfully Staven Moffat will not be splitting the series again.Thats the good news. The bad news is we will have to wait till next autumn for season 7.Then its even more good news ….50th anniversary episode ! Moffat says its gonna be epic ! Methinks we could be getting a few more Doctors ? David Tennant & Matt Smith face to face ? – "My sonic is bigger than your sonic"

  15. Kate says:

I also agree the reveal of River Song should be on the list. She's an amazing addition to the Whoverse and has added such spice to the series. I didn't like David Tennant as Doctor Who, but am loving Matt Smith and hope he sticks around a while!
