Doctor Who: Amy and Rory Officially Leaving in Series 7

Doctor Who fans, if you thought you'd seen the last of Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), you were wrong. We haven't seen the last of them... yet. Series 7 will mark the last outing for the couple as the Doctor's companions; they'll be replaced by someone new entirely, showrunner Steven Moffat says.

“Amy and Rory will leave ‘heartbreakingly’ during next series and The Doctor will get a new companion," tweeted BBC Entertainment reporter Lizo Mzimba. “Steven Moffat says plenty of Amy and Rory in next series, but they will leave ‘heartbreakingly’. New companion not yet cast."

That wasn't the only tweet regarding the departure of the Ponds. The official Doctor Who twitter made a similar announcement: Steven Moffat announces ‘The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series. Then the Doctor will meet a new friend.’”

Steven Moffat, true to form, simply added: “I am not going to tell you about he, she or it.” He did note, however, that "River Song WILL return too."

According to Doctor Who TV, a full announcement regarding their departure will happen on Friday.

Doctor Who will return for its seventh season next fall, with things looking very different for the Doctor after the series 6 finale, which saw him faking his own death and assuming a low profile for his future adventures. The show also seemed to seriously pose the answer to the age-old question that itself makes up the title of the show: Doctor Who?

I can't say I'm really looking forward to another sad departure, though thankfully we haven't had one since the Doctor regenerated back on New Year's Day 2010. Here's hoping they don't kill off Amy and Rory, who have been my two favorite companions since the show returned in 2005.

Doctor Who will air its Christmas special, "The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe," on Christmas Day in both the UK and the US.
