Doctor Who: What's Next for Karen Gillan?

Amy Pond / Karen Gillan in Doctor WhoDoctor Who is headed for a mix-up with next year's series 7. Regular companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams will be departing the show for good sometime during the series, it was announced last week. The couple, portrayed by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, have been with the show since 2010's series 5 (hough Darvill didn't become a regular companion until this year's sixth series). But, as is the nature of Doctor Who, it's time for them to move on.

Doctor Who provided Gillan with her breakthrough role, exposing the previously unknown actress to a worldwide audience. So now that she's departing from the role that propelled her to stardom, Gillan has revealed that she wants to work in stage productions.

"I want to do more theatre. I want to do more stage. I have a real passion for it," she told the Los Angeles Times"I want to do it as much as screen stuff, in all honesty, so that would be really amazing."

And don't think Gillan isn't aiming her sights pretty high: "Maybe something on Broadway. I'd love to do that. Not a musical, maybe like a play on Broadway."

But that's not all she wants to do: "I genuinely just want to do good work. I'm interested in character, whether that's in a play or a film or an indie film."

Gillan will make a brief appearance in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special "The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe," which airs on Christmas day. She'll be back in Doctor Who series 7 as well, which will mark her last year on the show.
