Doctor Who Spoilers - Christmas Special Details

Doctor Who's fifth season ended with a (big) bang. So how does Steven Moffat expect to follow that up? Well, he's "going for broke" with the new Christmas special, Digital Spy is reporting. The episode, tentatively titled "Father Who?," begins filming today.

Last year's Christmas special was the first part of "The End of Time," while the New Year special marked the end of David Tennant's run as the Doctor and the beginning of Matt Smith's. Moffat seems to be fairly confident about following up such a massive special.

"Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And The Doctor. And a honeymoon. And... oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically."

The Christmas special will feature one very big guest star: Dumbledore. That's right: Michael Gambon will be guest starring in the Christmas special. "Michael Gambon is as distinguished an actor as I can imagine and the fact that he was Dumbledore means that he is already known to millions of children," Moffat said. Classical singer Katherine Jenkins will also appear.

BBC exec Ben Stephenson has revealed that the episode will be based upon Charles Dickens' novel A Christmas Carol, providing a "clever twist" on the story, as well as giving Amy and the Doctor "an unforgettable present!"

Doctor Who has gone through five Christmas specials since its reboot in 2005, all of them starring David Tennant as the Doctor. He fought the deadly Christmas trees of the Sycorax in "The Christmas Invasion" in 2005, saved the world with Donna Noble in 2006's "The Runaway Bride," saved the second sinking of the Titanic in 2007's "Voyage of the Damned," faced a giant Cyberman in 2008's "The Next Doctor," and finally saw the return of the Master  in 2009's "The End of Time."
