As if you weren't already pumped for the return of Doctor Who the BBC has unleashed a trailer for the second half of the season that is a jolt to the imagination. Maybe it's because I've been denied Doctor Who goodness for too long, but it seems to me that the second half of what is already a fantastic series for Matt Smith's Doctor looks better than the first. Hard to imagine, I know, but give the Doctor Who trailer a spin and see if you don't agree with me.
Alice in Wonderland-esque gardens, American pyramids, alien Minotaur looking beasties, and of course that lingering sense of dread as the Doctor prepares - seemingly - to meet his date with grim destiny head on. Wow. Let's relish some of the imagery for a moment.
What do these women have in common? Besides eye-patches? Actually, that's a pretty good point. One thing they definitely do have in common is River Song herself, but do these matching eye patches suggest River is in fact Madame Kovarian? Did River regenerate at some future point into the guise of Kovarian then travel back in time to try to kidnap herself? Brain. Exploding.
Area 52? I'm a sucker for any anachronism Doctor Who throws at me, so the image of an American Pyramid is awesome enough on its one, but the UFO nut in me is freaking out over the possibilities an Area 52 might hold. Look under the flag to see what I'm blathering on about.
Again with the patches! Was there some cosmic event where everyone lost their right eye? It doesn't need to be said that Doctor Who throws curve balls and red herrings (even though I just did), but this image has me really thinking about the importance of the similarities between River and Kovarian - as in, maybe there is more going on than meets the eye.
Let's end with the beginning. The Doctor reflected in what appears to be page one of his digital obituary brings us back to the imperative of this season: can the Doctor cheat death? Did he even die? Doctor Who returns on BBC-America on August 27th.
