Romance for 'Doctor Who'? Matt Smith hopes not

The Doctor may have fallen in love with Rose Tyler, but Matt Smith is hoping that he doesn't do the same for Amy Pond.

The twenty-seven-year-old actor, who began his on-screen tenure as the Doctor only this year, hopes that a romance won't be blossoming between himself and his new companion, Amy Pond. Amy, played by Scottish actress Karen Gillan, has shown just some slight interest in the Doctor, who served in the capacity of an imaginary friend throughout her childhood. In one scene from the premiere, Amy refused to avert her eyes as the Doctor changed clothes, her attraction to him apparent.

"There is always room for romance inĀ Doctor Who but to be honest, the idea of the companion and the Doctor getting together is a bit of a tired story by now," Smith told the Chicago Sun Times. "There is only so far it can go. What happens? So, they get together, travel around the universe, end of story? There has to be more to it than that."

Smith brings up a good point; the Doctor's romances never end up well; the Tenth Doctor was forever separated from his love Rose Tyler when she became trapped in an alternate dimension; a human form of the Doctor remained with her, but the Doctor himself was left unfulfilled and lonely. The same applies to his relationship with River Song, whom he met in "Silence in the Library." Though for him, it was their first meeting, for Song, it was their last; she died after revealing that she knew the Doctor (in a future incarnation), and that they had been close enough for him to reveal to her his true name (after all, his birth certificate doesn't read "The Doctor"). Song is slated to make an appearance later this season, though that might be the only romance that the Doctor encounters for the year.

As Smith put it: "It has to be about adventure, magic and exploration. Those are the things we're interested in this season, really."

Doctor Who's 2010 series will premiere on U.S. shores on BBC America Saturday night, while on Saturday the U.K. will be experiencing episode three of the new series, "Victory of the Daleks."

I don't want romance between The Doctor and Amy either. I like them as loving companions but not as erotic partners, not at all.

i think it would be good, then we could see the doctor all unhappy again when another companian dies :(

What? Let's hope Amy does not die! I would not appreciate that. Well, I WOULD, it being a major part of the story, but I still do not wish for it. I'm not sure I am all that keen on seeing the Doctor fully depressed, either. Not that I mind, makes for a great part of the story, adds to its richness, but I don't want Amy to get killed.
