Emily Owens, M.D.: The Cast Teases Upcoming Relationship Drama

Emily Owens M.D. (The CW)Like in any good hospital series, the doctors of Emily Owens, M.D. are currently embroiled in some relationship drama. The pilot set up a love triangle in the form of Emily, Will and Cassandra, with a little bit of Micah thrown in for good measure.

Will seemed to reject Emily in the premiere, but that doesn’t mean this love quadrangle won’t be getting some mileage in upcoming episodes. In fact, during a visit to the Emily Owens, M.D. set in Vancouver*, star Justin Hartley (Will) told us that the romance possibilities from Will and Emily is far from over: “Are we done with it? No, no, no. There’s a whole other thing that happens. It carries on and on, but in more interesting ways than just the same thing fed to you over and over and over again. It’s sort of sophisticated and smart, and well thought out.”

Despite his initial rejection, Will will start seeing Emily in a different light. “He starts to see her professionally in a different light, maybe, but also personally. I think sometimes when something is presented to you, that you weren’t aware of, I think there’s a knee jerk reaction, maybe, and then after that, [when] you have time to sort of slow down and take a breath, you look at it a little bit differently, and I think that’s sort of what Will is going through right now.” While Cassandra’s affection for Will, meanwhile, seems to come from a genuine place, when she gets wind that her supposedly “sure thing” with Will isn’t so sure after all, you can bet she won’t be impressed, Aja Naomi King (Cassandra) teased.  And the close friendship (turned relationship?) between Will and Emily will cause Cassandra some jealousy.

For her part, star Mamie Gummer (Emily) says that Will’s interest in Emily might flare up when he sees that someone else starts getting interested in her. “I think, maybe, seeing someone else’s attention turn on her, sort of looking at her like that, perceiving her as such, might kind of start to make [Will] wonder.” As the two of them continue to be friends – and possibly something more – we’ll learn more about their history and what drew Emily to Will in the first place.

As for Micah – another potential love interest – Mamie explained that the two of them become fast friends and “pal up pretty quickly”. And while Emily might not be looking at Micah in a romantic capacity, that doesn’t mean he’s not looking at her, Michael Rady (Micah) teased that Micah will be testing the waters with Emily, even if it is slow-going.

A new episode of Emily Owens M.D. will be airing on October 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
