One of the more perplexing moments of last night’s Emmys (outside of Sofia Vergara awkwardly rotating on a platform like she was up for auction) was a surprise, prolonged kiss between Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, both winners of the night for Best Comedy Actress and Best Drama Actor respectively.
Despite an onscreen explanation, many were confused about why the two actors, both married to other people, were making out. It all stems from a Seinfeld reference, even if it took a long, strange walk to get to that joke. When the two were presenting together, Julia Louis-Drefyus made the joke that Cranston looked like a guy she used to date on Seinfeld (Tim Whatley, who Cranston did play). Later, when she won the award, he tried to “remind” her by giving her a huge smooch in front of everyone (including their significant others).
It was…a bit uncomfortable to say the least, and I wouldn’t say it put a damper on either of their wins, but a fair amount of people are talking about it today all the same. This may make more sense if you combine both the explanation with the two videos themselves, which you can check out below.
I don’t know. It seems like a long walk for a pretty obscure joke, but when you’re a half-drunk pair of celebrities drowning in Emmy wins, I suppose you’re kind of allowed to do whatever you want. And the Sofia Vergara thing might actually be even more awkward now that I’m thinking about it. The Emmys always have their strange moments, but I’d say last night’s had more than their fair share.
