The Extreme Length a Chief of Police went to Get David Bowie’s Autograph

One thing you would think that a police chief would never do to obtain an autograph, even when it was David Bowie’s, is call in a bomb scare. But apparently that’s what happened while Bowie’s plane was leaving Italy during one of his tours. At that point Bowie had already had to sing through tear gas and rioting that started when people could no longer purchase tickets to the sold out show. They started rioting with the police at that point and making the scene more than a little untenable, which only made the concert that much harder to perform. Bowie had already started to announce that his tours were taking more and more out of him because it was a supreme effort just to get ready, get set up, and then perform and then tear it all down to do it all again. It might have been tough to feel sorry for the guy but there was still enough sympathy that a person could think that Bowie might have needed a break.

He didn’t get it on the night that he and his crew were flying out of Rome. A bomb scare that had been phoned in caused the plane to land back at the airport with the pilot no doubt in a panic and the passengers no doubt wondering what was going on as they were likely already tired and unnerved by this development. Usually, even back in those days, an airplane wouldn’t be called back unless it was an emergency. Well, a bomb threat back then was just as big of an emergency as it is now, though whether the police chief that called it in got in as much trouble as they would now is hard to tell.

That’s right, a police chief in Italy decided it would be okay to call in a bomb scare so as to get the plane to come back just so he could get Bowie’s autograph. Bowie wasn’t so much annoyed as he was stunned to think that anyone would pull this kind of stunt. In this day and age the police chief wouldn’t just be fired, he’d be labeled public dunce number one for at least a few weeks if not longer and then possibly ‘interviewed’ by the FBI and even Homeland Security. That kind of stunt would get a person on the watch list for the rest of their days most likely and possibly on the no-fly list as well. Of course I’m speculating but that seems like it would be the kind of punishment that might get handed down.

The lengths that some people go to in order to interact on any level with their favorite celebrities can get a little nuts at times. But to think that someone would do something that might be a cause for national security to step in is going above and beyond crazy. That’s a level of obsession that’s just a little freaky. I don’t know about you, but if I wanted an autograph from a singer I don’t think I’d want to ruin my life over it.
