Honoring Lynda Carter with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her role in TV’s Wonder Woman seems like something that should have already happened a while back. It’s not too hard to believe that Patty Jenkins, the woman who directed the Wonder Woman movie just last year, will be one of the guest speakers at the ceremony. If you want to know the truth, Carter wasn’t the original Wonder Woman that played the TV version, but she was the icon that took over the role and made it last within the American consciousness. Her portrayal of the fierce Amazonian warrior princess was so great that people were hoping to see her in the movie with a cameo of some sort. You can quit looking if the thought’s already entered your head since it’s been confirmed that she’s not there.
Jenkins however is hoping that she might be agreeable to entertaining the thought of having a cameo in the Wonder Woman sequel that’s scheduled to hit theaters in 2019. It was pretty refreshing to see a female superhero back in those days when most if not all of the heroes were men and the women were usually the damsels in distress that needed rescuing. Wonder Woman kind of put that role to bed when she came out and started tearing it up just as well as the men did. Despite not being the first to the role Lynda Carter was a pioneer in the way she managed to bring the character to life. It’s unfortunate that it took so long to recognize her contribution and honor her with a star, but the chances of seeing this happen earlier were kind of slim since women have just recently been making their way forward in a big way when it comes to blockbuster movies.
It’s still important however to remember the ladies that really paved the way and made it possible for the kind of films and shows we have today. Women in TV and movies have started taking over in the superhero department and are showing that they can hang with the men on just about every level. As the DC universe continues to heat up and possibly expand it’s going to be interesting to see what they do with the rest of their female heroes and how soon they bring them out. There are plenty of heroines within the DC universe but unleashing them in TV and movies so far has been a painstaking process that has greatly challenged the status quo and made some people rather defensive. Wonder Woman is undoubtedly one of the strongest women in the DC universe but has still taken a long time to finally come into her own as she has now.
A lot of thanks is to be given to Carter since from the moment she came on screen she managed to give Wonder Woman a look and a voice that was something special in the making. This star on the Walk of Fame is just one more point of validation that says women are here and it’s time to recognize the fact.
