It’s only been a couple of months since Idaho tattoo artist Rayce took home the top spot on the second season of Face Off. His mixture of heightened imagination, interesting color palettes, and dynamic sculpting help take the father of four to the title, never dropping into the bottom during the season. It was the rare deserved, satisfying reality-competition win, Rayce’s nice guy demeanor and impressive work ethic endlessly charming and quite admirable to boot.
But Rayce’s time as reigning Face Off champion may be over sooner than expected, as Syfy has released a trailer for the upcoming third season. Though it doesn’t have a confirmed date yet, Face Off will be returning this summer with 26 contestants competing in 24 challenges to follow in the footsteps of Rayce and season one champion Conor. No other information could be gathered from the trailer, pieced together with footage from season two, but the increase in both contestants and challenges makes sense. Face Off grew by leaps and bounds after a moderately successful first season, giving Syfy a strong foothold on Wednesday nights with a watercooler-type reality program; I just hope that the quality can remain high for that long a time.
I don’t doubt the creative team involved in Face Off, not at all, but doubling the number of contestants and extending the season will require that much more forward thinking and fresh ideas. It’d be an ordeal for even the most talented people to undergo, so here’s to one of the best reality shows on television staying on top, both in the ratings and creatively.
Do you think that Face Off can still be great television with such a large field of contestants? What kind of challenges do you want to see included? What has been your favorite makeup from the first two seasons of Face Off?
