But wasn't Palin's constant innuendo that Obama was a muslim/terrorist far more potentially threatening to him and his family than Dave's comments are to hers? I agree with you in principle, I've never been a fan of potty humor, but the double standard seems all one sided here. I've never heard Palin apologize for her own brand of offensiveness: twisting the truth for political gain. Particularly when, as she exhibits in the interview, she seems to be trying to use this lewd joke situation to push some decency agenda. If she is successful, she may eventually get to start yanking books out of the libraries like she tried in Wasilla. She is not merely insulted here, she is trying to turn this into a crusade.

No, actually I did read the article. Although you did put yourself in Palin's shoes, it (to me at least) did not feel genuine as you seemed ready to dish out the blame equally between the two. My criticism is not directed so much toward Letterman's comments as it is against the double-standard of the American media, and the caustic nature of most of the above comments. I don't agree with Palin on most political issues, and I am relieved that she was not elected to the second most powerful position in the world as you put it Joe, but calling Palin a "stupid f**king lying slut" as jeff wrote is just wrong.

Well, you obviously didn't read the article because I repeatedly admonished Dave, and even put myself in Palin's shoes. The problem is, she is trying to twist and turn this into some national call for censorship of Dave. All I can say is THANK FREAKING GOD she wasn't elected to the second most powerful position in the world.

I am a Democrat, but honestly, what Letterman did was just wrong. If he had made jokes about Nancy Pelosi's daughters, or Hillary Rodham Clinton's daughter, the media and the public (at least the vocal public) would be outraged. There is a nasty double-standard when it comes to discrimination in this country and I am appalled at this article and at some of the comments above this one. You don't have to agree with Palin politically, but she's still a human being, and her daughter has done nothing to deserve any of this.
