Until recently, I had never seen the genius that is Firefly. The show, which aired for a short and beleaguered run in 2003, has been constantly called one of the best shows to ever grace network television, and certainly one of the brightest shows that has ever been prematurely shot down. I was afraid to watch it, because I thought I would be dissatisfied with the ending. Like the show Carnivale, I was afraid the show would end abruptly with no resolution. I thought that watching the show would only be a teaser to what could have been.
And to a certain extent, it is. Firefly was such a brilliant show that, at times, you can't help but regret how soon FOX decided to end its short little life. The cast is brilliant and full of familiar faces (Nathan Fillian from Castle, Summer Glau from T:SCC and Dollhouse, Morena Baccarin from V), and they interact together in a brilliant universe that creator Joss Whedon narrowly dodges being a cliche setting (here's why it isn't trite: no aliens!).
Mark O. Estes, a fellow writer here at TVOvermind, kindly sent me his copy of Firefly on DVD, and I consumed it within twenty-four hours. I just couldn't stop. Episode after episode, the show just got better and better. It had the potential to consume weeks of my life had there been other seasons, but alas, there were no more.
But Firefly's short first season has gotten plenty of life in the cult fandom thanks to its DVD, as well as its Blu-ray disc, which hit several years ago. As I still haven't updated to a Blu-ray player, I can't get the Blu-ray set, but my gut tells me that seeing the spaceship Serenity float through space in HD would be well worth whatever price is asked for the series.
Today only, on September 12, 2010, Amazon just wants $26.99 for the Blu-ray set. That's 70% off its usual asking price of $89. Now is the time to jump for both fans and non-fans alike. If you've seen this brilliant series, but don't have the Blu-ray, it'll be a mistake for you not to splurge and snag a copy from Amazon. If you've never seen Firefly, there's even more reason to check out this short but amazing series.
