One of the 2009 fall season's most promising shows has fallen so far. After receiving hype all summer long, the series unfortunately failed to live up to viewing expectations, and began hemorrhaging viewers after its long break and return in March. Now, I'm sorry to say, the Alphabet Network has decided not to renew FlashForward for a second season.
It was my favorite new show of the year, so I'm obviously showing a little disappointment over this inevitable cancellation, which was announced along with the cancellations of Scrubs, Better Off Ted, and Romantically Challenged. As I posted not an hour ago, things weren't looking too peachy after the announced renewal of V. While I wasn't expecting a confirmation quite so soon, it seems that the predicted second blackout will never occur -- or, at least, we won't see the results.
However, author Robert J. Sawyer confirmed in an interview with Digital Spy that the producers of the show won't let FlashForward be another show left with dangling plot. He promised that editing would be done to the finale -- major, major editing -- to close up most loose threads and to make the series finale more satisfying to fans. Every dark cloud has silver lining, I suppose.
Still, I can't help but thinking how much better FlashForward would have worked as more of an event miniseries. The show's viewership was incredibly wounded by the long, long break between episodes ten and eleven, and not even a drastic rise in episodic quality could prevent the massive loss of viewers. However, presenting the show as a story with a beginning, middle, and end (i.e. a miniseries) could have saved the show from the wrath of viewers not willing to take on a new mind trip before LOST expired. I also feel bad for the great cast of the series, including John Cho and Dominic Monaghan, both big name actors who should have made the show more popular.
In the end, though, what's done is done. And though fans might start sending chess pieces in to ABC begging for more of their favorite show, I'll take the resolution that the edited finale will give us and be happy. At least we have V.

It's just a wrong decision. Flashforward is so good and keeps getting better. I stopped watching V after the third episode. Flashforward has better casts and plot. What a disappointment. Am I the only one who thinks that Flashforward is way better than V? Damn… I guess what's done is done. A great series finale is all I ask for now.
V sucks!!!

I don't like V. Well, now that a show I really liked is going to end sooner than I expected, I hope for a proper ending since there's nothing else to hope for. But I will not watch V because I just don't like it. (Too bad for me, heh? I know… but can't help it, it just does not click with me)FF's Series Finale… yeah, that's ll that's left.
Flashforward had a lot of potential. The long break along with some week episodes defiantly hurt. There are so many character story lines they tried to shove together. All were great, but there were too many at once. I have a feeling the finale will be so-so since the series was set up for multiple seasons.I love V, happy to see it picked up for a second season. Wish Flashforward could have more time. I agree with the mini-series idea. It would be great to bring it back and build on the story with a mini-series, get the creator's ideas out there.
Yeah, we get V. Great. My doctor told me that I needed more plot holes in my diet.
I'm sick to death of so many shows being axed prematurely. The 4400, Defying Gravity and now Flash Forward. What is it with these 'mid season breaks' that everything seems to have now? No wonder casual viewers lose interest. I used to get excited when a new sci-fi show aired but now I can't really be bothered when I know the networks are going to pull the plug half-way through.Great though Flash Forward was, Dominic Monaghan was a very poor choice as Simon Campos.
This annoying policy networks have now of inserting these long, insufferable mid-seasonal hiatuses (hiatusi?) – has killed more than one promising show. The policy is virtually suicidal for ratings, especially for shows with complicated serial story lines. Are a few re-runs too much to ask? I don't know if the networks insist on doing it so they can air more of these nauseating reality shows, but whatever the reason, I hope the policy ends.
The most intriguing aspects of FlashForward's storyline came from Robert J. Sawyer's novel, not from the ABC script schlockmeisters and programmers who tried to turn a fascinating, thought-provoking story into just another 'Lost' clone. And now we see how miserably they failed; surprise, surprise. Yes, FlashForward would have been much better as a miniseries, but for that to have succeeded, they'd have been better off following the original story more closely and focusing purely on the issues of free will, choice, whether you can change history, and the startling surprises of particle physics instead of manufacturing needless conspiracies. That would have made the basic issues and conflict clearer, sharper, and more compelling, not to mention easier to follow (and still no less fascinating). But no: ABC had to treat its audience (again) as it if were a bunch of stupid ADD-burdened children and dumb down the material (must they always do this with real science fiction?!?) instead of writing for adults capable of complex thought and longer attention spans. ABC gets the failure it deserves. It would have done better to have supported Defying Gravity instead and left this project to HBO for cable. And ABC promises us more boring, infantile programming in the fall. Thanks ever so much. I know what I'll be watching: cable and PBS. ABC can go frack itself, not that it hasn't already …
V is a very very crappy show. I won't watch it.
I am never going to forgvive ABC
It pisses? me off that they ended the 4400, then LOST now flashforward. So angry, we need more shows like these on TV for good entertainment. Why the hell would they cancel! Sick of all the bland shows that are not original.
flash fowered is my all time favorite show i am now devistated that ABC didnt renew i hope they may change their minds.
The problem is…the finale DIDN'T satisfy most of us. It left a lot of new questions…too many new questions. Sure…we would probably allow a couple of questions. But DOZENS?
The problem with this is that there are a lot of devoted ABC followers, that wont follow them anymore because they keep doing what they do best, lose viewers due to their stupidity. But oh well maybe they will understand when their viewer base in total is down. V is a crappy show to one up Flashforward, either they need to bring the show back, or sell the right to it so some other network can bring it back.
Seriously? Flashforward sucks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad. V is just as bad. They tried so hard and ultimately that's all it was…them trying hard but with nothing to show for it. Super FF is canceled….and this comes from a viewer who really looked forward to the show and tried very diligently to give it a shot. What a waste.
I can't believe they're not going to bring it back, i absolutely loved Flashforwardsign the petition!!http://www.petitiononline.com/FlashS2/petition-…..
I haven't watched commercial television in years
they allways screw up a good thing. I discovered Flash Forward on Netflix and loved the show.
After I got through SE1 EP18. I decided to look for season2. I was very dissapointed
to discover that there is no season 2. Not the first time left hanging to see a second season
of a good thing. Good science fiction is so hard to come by.
