joseph-fiennesGreat news for sci-fi fans as the science fiction pilot Flash Forward, starring Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love), has been officially picked up by ABC and given a 13-episode order, according to the network.  The series is based on Robert J. Sawyer's novel of the same name.

The premise of Flash Foward centers on what happens when everyone on Earth briefly falls unconscious at the same time, for two minutes and 17 seconds. During those moments, people see what happens to their lives six months into the future.

In addition to Joseph Fiennes, the cast of Flash Forward includes Sonya Walger (Lost's Penny Widmore), John Cho (of Harold & Kumar fame), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean), Brian O'Byrne (Brotherhood), Courtney B. Vance(Law & Order:  Criminal Intent), Zachary Knighton (Life on a Stick), Peyton List (Mad Men, Big Shots), and relative newcomer Christine Woods.  I hate to curse a series with the words "dream cast", a la Studio 60, but the thought did enter my mind.

David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga wrote the pilot, with Goyer also serving as director. Goyer, Braga, Vince Gerardis, Jessika Goyer, Marc Guggenheim and Ralph Vicinanza are executive producers; Guggenheim (Eli Stone) and Goyer (Blade:  Trinity) will serve as showrunners.

While I would have preferred to hear that this promising series had received a full season pick-up, I, for one, am thrilled to have a new science fiction drama coming to the small screen this fall.
