There is a good reason that FlashForward has the highest level of awareness of all of the new shows premiering next month: ABC paid good money for that effect. The cynics out there may look at the gargantuan marketing engine for FlashForward and wonder if all of that glitzy advertising is making up for something that FlashForward is lacking. Good news... it's not. Not only is FlashForward one of the most interesting concepts of the new fall season, it has a story engine that speaks to the audience and the times in a way that resonates very clearly. FlashForward really is one of the best new shows on the horizon.
We're reserving our full out review (we read the script and saw the pilot several times, so we feel we know FlashForward pretty well at this point) for later on, when the timing is more appropriate, but trust me - it is absolutely worth it to take in all of the extremely well done marketing efforts and let the excitement continue to mount. FlashForward is NOT going to disappoint.
In one of the new promos, which I've included below, FlashForward's triple threat writer/producer/director David S. Goyer describes staging the pile-up scene for the pilot shoot. One thing I think the marketing has failed to capture so far is the fact that FlashForward is a character story. FlashForward is definitely an 'event' based story, and it delivers that very well, but the most compelling part of the pilot to me was how well the event of FlashForward connected with the lead character's lives. In fact, no-spoilers here, the cliffhanger of the pilot is very character oriented.
A lot of folks are looking at the 'event' aspects of FlashForward and questioning whether there is enough story-firewood to burn this thing for more than a handful of episodes. Even without knowing where Goyer and crew have gone with the more fantastic elements of FlashForward it is easy to see how the series could go on for quite some time with just the character fallout of the event. Rest assured, the early concerns over the viability of the series will fast be put to rest after FlashForward premieres.
