The Hiphobbitopotamus is the best I've got, I think.

New Zealand actor Bret McKenzie is no stranger to J.R.R. Tolkein. Though he's more famous for being part of the comedic folk duo Flight of the Conchords along with Jemaine Clement, McKenzie also had a bit role in the Best Picture-winning final entry of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Return of the King. McKenzie's role, named by internet fans as Figwit (standing for "Frodo is great...who is that?") was an elf with only two lines. That role (pictured below left), however, spawned a large fanbase -- and perhaps inspired this music video from season one of the Conchords' HBO comedy series.

Could Bret be warning Frodo against wearing the ring in a more canon sense in the future, though? According to AAP, that's exactly what director Peter Jackson would like to happen.

The Hobbit, which began filming earlier this month, already stars the UK Office's Martin Freeman as the titular character Bilbo Baggins, alongside other television stars such as Elijah Wood (Wilfred) and James Nesbitt (Murphy's Law). Former Doctor Who star David Tennant has also been in talks to portray an elf in the film. The two-part film is being shot in New Zealand, home to both Clement and Jackson. Part one of the film is slated to be released next winter.

What do you think? Would you like to see Bret take on a more important role in Middle Earth? Which character from the book should he play, or should Figwit make another appearance? Sound off below!

The Best of 'Flight of the Conchords'

The sheep will never land.

The season two finale (now series finale) of Flight of the Conchords ended with character Jemaine Clemaine (Jemaine Clement) tossing a sheep into the air, then staring at the camera when the sheep failed to come back down. This strangely comedic ending for an equally strange show was very fitting. The final episode, "Evicted," saw Bret (Bret McKenzie) and Jemaine (along with their manager Murray Hewitt, played by Rhys Darby) deported back to New Zealand after two seasons' worth of adventuring in New York.

McKenzie and Clement, along with co-creator James Bobin, confirmed on Thursday that Conchords has officially landed, and that "Evicted" would be the last episode of the HBO series, which premiered back in 2007. "We’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it," they issued in a statement.

The series has spawned two successful companion albums (the eponymous Flight of the Conchords and I Told You I Was Freaky), which served as soundtracks to the first and second seasons, respectively.

However, don't think you've seen the last of the Conchords. The real-life band, comprised of McKenzie and Clement, had a long and productive career before they ever appeared on television, with their song "Robots" becoming an Internet sensation long before the band was a household name.

"While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist," they confirmed in the aforementioned statement, implying that the Conchords are nowhere near done making the hilarious tunes that made them famous.

Here's a look back at our favorite moments from the series short but fruitful run.

'Conchords' might not go on

The show might not go on for Flight of the Conchords. While the duo will of course remain together, hopes for a third season of their uproarious HBO comedy are growing dimmer and dimmer by the second. However, for the first time in a long while, it's not the network's fault. Instead, you can put the blame on the two funnymen behind it all, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie.

The two have long been burdened by the additional task of writing an album's worth of songs to go with the series. "We've got to write the series, but we've also got to write the songs, and just dividing your time into those two writing tasks is really tricky," Clement told the Hollywood Reporter, explaining why the series might not return for a season three.

While nothing is set in stone, Clement said that he'll meet with McKenzie and executive produer James Bobin to discuss the future of the show. A decision will be made within a month, Clement assured.

While I'd personally be saddened if Conchords went off the air, I'd also be happy that it was by their terms and not by the terms of higher-ups. HBO actually wants the show to keep going. "We've left their future entirely in their hands," said Nancy Lesser, a spokeswoman for the network. "We would love to have more, and we left an open door at HBO."

If Conchords does return, "it could come back in a shorter season or like a special," Clement said. Well Jemaine, any Conchords is better than no Conchords.

The show, which featured fictionalized versions of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, the real life Flight of the Conchords, was finally getting more of the recognition it deserves. However, something was missing from my happiness – news of the release of the band’s second album. Though ten songs from the fifteen track album were already available on iTunes as singles, I was still hoping for a more complete soundtrack of the second season, which would perhaps include more songs that I thought were left out (“Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor,” for example, which was left out in favor of the Emmy-nominated ballad “Carol Brown”).

So then, to my surprise, Sub Pop, the record label that carries the Conchords, announced that the new album, featuring the ten songs already released and an additional five songs, would be released October 20th, three months from now. That’s quite a long way away from the initial release date, which was anticipated for early June, but was postponed mysteriously shortly before the actual date rolled around.

My guess is that the label was expecting some sort of Emmy recognition for the two awkward New Zealanders who created one of HBO’s funniest efforts in years, and postponed the album to ride on the waves that the Emmy nomination (regardless of whether they would win or not) would bring.

Songs for the album will include the hip-hop song “Sugalumps”(from the episode “A New Cup”), the sad rapper’s song “Hurt Feelings” (from “The Tough Brets”), and the strange cannibalism-themed sea shanty “Petrov, Yelyena, and Me” (from the season finale, “Evicted.”)

You can pick up season two of Flight of the Conchords on DVD in stores August 4th.
