Sources have revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the Peacock network and Directv are in active talks to renew their unique, shared-relationship experiment with Friday Night Lights. This comes as somewhat of a surprise due to the low ratings the show has captured this season, regularly scoring only a 2.5 rating/4 share with approximately 4 million viewers. Friday Night Lights has been a critical success, though, and that might be enough for NBC given its continued ratings problems lately. What's more interesting is that according to an insider close to the negotiations, DTV and NBC might only seal the deal if they can get a two-season pickup.
Though a spokesperson for NBC Universal declined to comment, a Peacock insider acknowledges that the studio is "actively looking at ways to keep FNL going." Another NBC source adds, "We're very optimistic a deal will be worked out."
But its not all touchdowns and tackles for Friday Night Lights, as several questions remain if a new deal is signed. For one, star Jason Katims is attached to NBC's new pilot, Parenthood (yep, its based on the 1989 movie of the same name). Second, Jeffrey Reiner, the main director for the series, is working on NBC's new Trauma pilot, and his future availability could be limited. How FNL might work through these complications is still up in the air, but until NBC and Directv sign a deal, the issues are moot.
So keep your fingers crossed that another great series will make it through to next year, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

This would make my little fangirly heart all aflutter. I really think this is one of the best dramas on television…. it's nice to see that someone else does too!
