How Well Does Fringe Season 4 Need to Perform? FOX Prez Answers

If you're a Fringe fan like me, you can't help but think that your luck is running out. After all, it was a bit of a surprise when the series was renewed for a third season; even more so when it was renewed for a fourth. A fifth is really pushing our luck, right?

Not necessarily, says FOX entertainment president Kevin Reilly. “I don’t expect Fringe to grow. It’s a pretty complex show,” Reilly told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “If Fringe can do exactly what it did last year, we’re going to be very happy."

Expectations aren't necessarily high or the sci-fi show on the viewership front; the show ended its third season with just 3.29 million viewers. Shows have performed better and still been cancelled, yet Fringe was renewed. As Reilly explained, big shows like American Idol give FOX the ability to "support creative shows that deserve to be on the air.” And if any network show deserves to be on the air, it's Fringe.

Fringe will return for its fourth season on Friday, September 23, with the season premiere, titled "A Sort of Homecoming."
