Only three episodes into the third season and the Fringe writers are already starting to play with our emotions and, more importantly, our loyalties. Just a few months ago we were convinced all those characters over there were up to no good. I mean, how could they with their ominously advanced technology, questionable hairstyles (Charlie Francis with a buzz-cut? PUH-LEEZ!) and their less-than-friendly welcome to our Fringe team? But after the most recent episode, The Plateau (read our review), we're starting to second guess. The writers are slowly showing us that some of those alternates aren't so bad. Despite his Freddy Krueger skin, Agent Lincoln Lee is very likable and Charlie is more-or-less the same guy we know and love. The question is, who are we supposed to root for now? Surely not both of them, right?
Well it's apparently all part of the plan. Jasika Nicole, who plays the lovable Astrid Farnsworth, told Give me my Remote we're supposed question our loyalties.
"I think that’s what they’re trying to do in season three. To show both sides, the good and the bad parts of each universes, so that the audience doesn’t doesn’t really know immediately who they’re supposed to side with. What if they’re not supposed to side with anyone and what happens?"
She continues, "I think that by the end of season three they want it to be where you don’t want anybody to die, you don’t want either of the universes to disappear."
I, for one, want to keep both of them around. And the fact that we've really only begun to scratch the surface of the parallel universe convinces me we'll be seeing more of it in the foreseeable future. Heck, I say add a third universe to really spice things up.
Here's a link to the full interview.
So are you as divided as we are? Or do you already picked out a side?
As long as Walternate and Fakelivia never never come anywhere near this universe again, nor near Peter, Walter or Olivia, I'm ok with them existing. But I'm invested in, care about, our three heroes, and this universe. I know the alt-u is a fun toy for the writers, and probably astounding to those viewers who haven't read much science fiction, or watched many sci fi movies, but otherwise? BTDT. Last night's episode was amazing, and heartbreakingly beautiful at the end…it will always, only be Peter and Olivia and Walter that make the show for me. Sorry, red-u, I'm not that into you.
