Perhaps one of the biggest draws to Fringe is the marvelous characterization, which is incredibly strong for a genre procedural. One draw is, naturally, the burgeoning romance between the show's two young leads, Peter Bishop and Olivia Dunham. Dunham, who was romantically linked with Christopher Chance John Scott in the pilot episode, took the long road in getting over her former fiance's betrayal and death. When she finally left behind his memory at the midway point of the season, there was a bit of a spark of chemistry between the two, which grew over the following season and nearly resulted in a kiss between the two in the episode "Jacksonville." That was, until Olivia discovered that he was from the alternate universe. After Peter went to the other universe, Olivia followed him, and upon finding him, kissed him. It was an emotional payoff to two seasons, and would have been a really nice moment had Olivia not been trapped in the alternate universe and swapped with Altlivia, the much eviller version of herself. Peter, who had earlier shown sort-of interest in Altlivia might just be swayed to her embrace, right?
Possibly, according to Anna Torv, who plays both versions of Olivia. "I don't know if [a full-blown romantic relationship]'s ever going to happen," the actress told Entertainment Weekly.
However, that doesn't mean she doesn't love the relationship. "I think it's perfect," she said. "Of course you want them to get together, [but] every time they try, there's an obstable, and then another obstacle." However, she did note that Olivia's kiss to Peter in "Over There, Part 2" was "as close as she gets to declaring her love."
Fringe's third season premiere, "Olivia," will hit your screens on Thursday, September 23, on FOX. I'm definitely going to be there -- if season two was any indicator, season three be simply amazing.
